Remington Stone hone

I have not found a lot of documentation about this base. Thoughts were it was in the retail stores so customers could visit and sharpen theirs knives. I have seen pics of a light-weight example that had a thin steel plate the stone rested in, hollow below. Weighs in at 5.5lbs

HAHA...that is why I bought it. Had no idea of value but had the price in my discretionary fund about 10 years ago. All I knew is that I had never seen one before, or since, and was not leaving the antique store without it.

I saw your awesome display pics and didn't see one of these on the counter . (Not that I would ever put it on a glass-topped display.)
If this was counterfeit I would think you would see a lot more examples?

Nice find! You're correct - these were called a counter hone, and were provided by knife manufacturers to their retailers. They typically sat on the sales counter where knives for sale were displayed, as a courtesy to customers. There's an extensive "sharpening stones" thread here on AAPK with examples of counter hones from several other brands, along with various other kinds of sharpening stones. I think there's another Remington stone there, different from yours. if I could get my copy/paste function working I'd post the link.
