What's your favorite frog stick'n knife

I hadn't thought about this for almost 40 years but when I lived in the Sierra's we used to do what was called frog stick'n. Usually involved a frog but when there wasn't one around we'd just aim at something on the ground. Playing around in the back yard and found that one of the best ones for this and me is a remington R1128. Seems to be weighted just right.

When I was a kid it was always a fixed blade.

I wouldn't 'stick a frog' because frog populations are in severe decline. As a kid over 50 years ago i would see a frog when outside every day during the summer. Now i have not seen a frog in over 10 years.
We used to play "Stretch": 2 boys face each other, throw your knife, if it sticks in the ground your opponent has to try to stretch his leg so foot touches knife. This happened on the grassy part of the school yard during the lunch hour, no complaints from teachers, etc. Try that today boys & girls !

We've still got frogs a plenty here in my part of Kentucky. When it rains they move from place to place and you'll see lots of them in the roadway. Still, like KJ I'm not going to stick one. I'd likely miss even if I tried.

I too played "stretch" when I was in school. Lots of fun. Sometimes one of the boys would propose we play for the other one's knife. I'd never take that bet because I didn't ever want to risk losing my beloved knife. I played strictly for the glory.

We played stretch also - the "safer" version of mumbleypeg (or mumbletypeg, depending on where you're from). Played it before school while waiting for the bell, and at recess.

No shortage of frogs around here, especially when it's been raining. Big ol bullfrogs down at the stock tank, I can hear them at night at the house, a quarter-mile away. Never stuck one with a knife, unless I was cleaning it to eat. I haven't gone frog gigging in years. Lots of tree frogs in the woods along the creek. Probably why we gave a healthy snake population! When it rains we see smaller frogs by the hundreds jumping across the roads, a lot are killed when run over by vehicles.

Toads are a different story - used to see them all over but nowadays they're rare. May see a couple of them a year. I heard the theory that their decline is due to the invasive imported fire ants.

We used to light frogs up with a headlamp and stick em with a long pole and gig. Take the back legs off and leave the rest for the turtles and catfish.

Haven't done that in twenty years, but my gig is still hanging on the wall in the garage.

Marinate frog legs in Italian dressing, batter and fry. That was some good eatin.

We were at Disney World some years ago. It rained and afterward the ground and walkways were covered in tiny frogs. Difficult to take astep and not kill one.

Guess that's where the expressing "Raining Frogs" came from. They do get active after a shower.

Grew up on a creek in Kansas. As a Kid I had a friend whose dad had a welder so we found two car hoods and ask his dad to weld them together. Presto a boat. We used a flashlight at night and we would pole up to them with the light in their eyes and just pick them up and put the in a burlap sack. Lots of good eatin, lots of good kid fun.

Used to be a healthy frog population here, along with many songbirds, now almost extinct. When I was a kid I did not have the respect for life that I do now; I am ashamed of some of the things I did. Once, I was walking the banks of the Mussellshell River looking for bait and came across a garter snake with a leopard frog about halfway into him. I gently eased the frog out, much to the indignation of the snake, but Mr. Frog was eminently grateful. But not for long.... He became bait for a catfish.
