Help with stamp: JEAND ' HEUF ??
I just got this very nice little dog leg pearl. I'm not at all familiar with this stamp.
Not completely confident in spelling of last word. Could be HEUR?
Auction seller thought it was French. I have no Idea.
Does any one have any experience with this stamp?
Thanks for any help.
Thanks for looking.

Re: Help with stamp: JEAND ' HEUF ??
The name is "Jean" (French for John), D'HEU ? is the sir name, not sure what the last letter is, but could be an "R", making it D'HEUR.
" D' ", or " d' " is seen with some French names. Basically it means "of", so in English "John of Heur", "Heur" being his father's sir(last) name.
Definitely a French marking but as it could be a merchant name it does not mean it was made in France.

Thank you for that information, Roland. Much appreciated.

I agree;definitely looks to be of German origin circa 1930's.Did you check the French website for the stamping?danno50 wrote:beautiful little pearl knife, Joe. Looks German to me, but what do I know?

Well, now with Dan and Ray calling it German I'd better rethink this.
Thank you, Ray. I didn't check a web site. I'm not sure what you are referring to.
Do you mean a translation of the name?
Thanks to all.

Joe, below is a website that lists a lot of French cutlery manufacturers and their marks. Not sure if this is the site Ray was referring to or not.

I took a quick look through the site and did not find your stamping.

My bet is a merchant marking, like the name of a cutlery store or fancy gift shop, etc.

That's the one. I too took a quick scan but didn't find anything either.danno50 wrote:Joe, below is a website that lists a lot of French cutlery manufacturers and their marks. Not sure if this is the site Ray was referring to or not.

Thank you very much for all the responses.
Thank you Dan, for the link to the web site. Interesting stuff there. I enjoyed going through it but could not find the stamp.
It may be, as Roland says, a more personalized stamp.
Again, thanks to every one.
