Burnt Stag

just curious if anyone has ever tried to torch a stag handle to get the burnt color.

I have an EDC that has been worn down and lost its great color. I was thinking of experimenting; has anyone else done this and are there any suggestions?

I have never tried torching stag as I dont care for the look. It should be easy, just pay attention to the color. I prefer potassium permanganate to color stag. Comes in a powder and you mix with water. Makes a purple liquid that will color your stag brown. Want it lighter? A lite buff or a rub down with a 3M pad will lighten the color. Want it darker? Add another coat of PP! You can find it at Lowes, Home Depot and other hardware stores.

I don't think torching works, and "burnt" stag is a misnomer I think. The old (pre-war) Case and KA-BAR knives which people often refer to as burnt stag weren't burnt at all, they were dyed.

Well, check with Elvis (Bob P.) (Bob is an accomplished knife mechanic member of this forum). He does it and in fact recommends it. I agree with him, the results depend on your skills with the torch. I've bought knives that were advertised as "burnt stag" and am very satisfied with them. Your opinion and/or results may vary.
