Dug this pocket kife up? Looks bronze, what is it?

Post by Sykesville21784 »

Found this yesterday while metal detecting in Maryland. Looks like it is a bronze pocket knife. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Thanks for your input! [image][/image]

Looks like at one time it was a pocket knife called an "easy-open jack knife". Handles may have been metal, but probably not bronze. A lot of them had bone handles but in its present condition it's difficult to say what they were.

Thank you Ken. Looks just like the jack knife, but the sides are barely metallic and it doesn't look like anything fell off over the years in the ground and is green like bronze would be. Very odd. Thank you for your input and help!

It is indeed an easy open jack, and it does have a bronze/brass type of handle. One company called the alloy "oroid" But it is some type of bronze or brass alloy. They were fairly popular in the 1920s-1930s since they were made by a lot of different companies. I have had them made by Remington, KA-BAR, and Robeson and I am sure I have seen others. You're lucky to get out to detect, ground here is frozen and it has been bitter cold.

Thank you Gunsil. Ken got me on the right track and the Remington is what I think it is too and agree with you... The farmer that used to own the land here lives up the street, maybe he lost it years ago riding a tractor...who knows, will ask him. THanks for your help...we had a warm day here yesterday so I was lucky to get out. take care.

There is no reason to think it was made by Remington. Like stated above, these were made by many different companies and without being able to see the marks on the blades nobody will ever be sure who made it.

CF Wolfertz also made the brass handled knives, they do feel quite substantial. Welcome to AAPK Sykesville, we are neighbors by the way.
