Pal Cutlery Stockman

Picked up a PAL Stockman today. It's bone with the Greenish color. It has issues but I liked it and felt it needed to come home with me. Any ideas on the age? Thanks for looking.

Looks like it's had a rough life, but I can see why you grabbed it up, that bone is pretty smooth and worn in!

Woodwalker I do believe Pal Cutlery Co . Stamping was used from shortly after WWll till their closing which I believe was 1953. Pal didn't use a lot of bone on their handles . Thats a good one.

Wow!! Thanks Greg! I have a couple fixed blade Pal's RH36 knives but I didn't have a PAL folder. Looks like someone re pinned it with a nail. Ha. But it had a long pull with what looks like a match striker pull main and I felt kinda sorry for it. Thanks again!

Interesting knife! I don't recall ever seeing a PAL with a match striker nail mark on it. I wonder if it might be an early knife that had some Remington parts still around. Come to think of it; I've never seen a PAL stockman either. I have several PAL knives including a Remington/PAL transition knife but that one has Remington stamped blades and PAL etched on the blades.

That is unusual to have the match strike long pull. I have a Pal stockman at home but can't remember what the pull looks like. I think most of the old Remington parts would have been marked Pal Blade Co. though.

What is the length of your Pal stockman? If it is 3 7/8 inches it may be a an R3553, according to one of my older reference sources. If it is 3 5/8 inches the pattern may be R3993.

An old "Big Book of Pocket Knives", 4th addition, has 2 pages showing Pal pocket knives. The R3553 is listed with a picture and this description:

R3553-Bone handle
Three blades; 1 master clip, 1 sheep's foot,
1 flesh or speying: all mirror finished; brass
lined; nickel silver bolsters, $108.00

This book was printed in 2010, I suppose the 108 was someone's appraisal of a mint R3553.

Wow!! Thank you so much for your time and research. I just liked how smooth the bone was and how it almost looked like Jade in color. Had my eye on it for a couple weeks and couldn't stand it no more just had to have it. All the blades are tight and all still snap. Someone loved this old knife. Now I will proudly carry it. I wondered about the apparent smooth bone but noticed some evidence of jigging on the mark side, it is truly a "pocket worn" knife.
We've all said or heard, "If knives could talk", I bet this old gal would have quite a tale to tell.
The book said Pal opened U.S. manufacturing facilities in 1935, so your knife might be 83 years old.

Thanks again Treefarmer. I carried it today and used it to cut some veggies for lunch at work. I like the length and the slim profile. This one is definitely going to be my EDC! It does have evidence of jigging on both sides. Very much pocket worn.

Wow Greg! Yours us a beauty!! I have been carrying mine all week. I will continue to carry it as I really like the length and the slim Ness of it. It just feels so good in my hand and pocket. It's kind a strange it's not that Goodlookin of a knife but I sure have grown foND of it!

I think that's right Greg. I'm pretty certain most of the parts on my knife were Remington role over parts.

Wow that's a great knife Keith! If I remember my history lessons correctly, I think Pal Blade and Razor Co. started about 1937. When they took over the Remington plant in 1941 they changed the name to Pal Blade Co. and sometime after WWII changed to Pal Cutlery Co. and went out of business in 1953.
The Pal knives with the left over Remington blades are a pretty hot ticket to acquire!
