Question about a Colonial knife

I just received this Colonial (stamped COLONIAL PROV. RI. PAT PEND).
Does anyone know the significance of the numbers on the handle?
Starts at zero and goes to forty.

The knife measures 3 1/2" and the handles are aluminum with plastic over the numbers.

Maybe someone rehandled it out of a measuring stick or dial/gauge of some sort? Note that the numbers are a bit crooked.

Reminds me of the speedometer on a '58 Chevy I used to have. The font and size are almost identical.

You both might be right. Here's 3 more pics. The more I look at it, the more it looks like someone re-handled it or rebuilt it. looks like some sort of "Frankenknife".
It's different and it's sharp as cheese.

Reminds me of the speedometer on a '58 Chevy I used to have.

It sure does, except the '58 speedo was curved. The '57 Pontiac had a linear speedo as did the '61 Olds Starfire but in both cases the font is not quite right. Probably some other cars had them as well. I think Cody's idea about some industrial measuring tool is the most likely.

My dad was a Cadillac Olds dealer in 1961. I got to ride with the service manager in a new Starfire convertible with the top down. Memories!

I remember that either the 59 or 60 Olds had a rotating drum speedometer. My brother would take dad's Olds demonstrator and floor it from a dead stop on Wabash to sixty mph and I would time it with my Timex. Like that was accurate? six seconds! Probably a few home owners were looking out their winders.
