eBay-Here we go again...

Maybe this is not new but to me it is and I don't get it. When you list an item on eBay, now a message comes up that says:

"You can't say you're not responsible once the USPS takes possession". Well, I'm not. If it gets lost, it's on them. I didn't lose it, they did.
"You can't say insurance is available at buyers cost". What? If they want to insure that package, it's on them at their cost.

It seems to get harder and harder to sell stuff on eBay. I don't get it.

Like so many here, I have come to despise eBay and their shenanigans. For the present, and maybe forever, I have fired them. Their policies are just too much for me. I had a return the other day and they acted like they would have to force me to take action. I explained that I had a return policy long before eBay got involved and they needed to butt out. They were not impressed and isn't it odd that they never send out one of those stupid surveys when something like that happens.

Ebay is a $***h***. For both the seller AND the buyer. Just my opinion, of course. I still go there. It is like if one wishes to furnish one's home with regular-type stuff, one must go communist China. The most desirable alternatives do not exist. Oh.... I could go on a rant here, but not much point.

OK, at the risk of being blasted, I'll ask a silly question: Why is it not the seller's responsibility if the buyer has not received the item? Even if the buyer pays the seller for the shipping, it is the seller that actually purchased the shipping service, and they are the ones that can initiate the trace and/or get a refund. Can the buyer even tell the shipping company to do that? I have always considered insurance as primarily purchased for coverage of damage during shipping. I know it actually covers both, but darn it, the shipping company shouldn't be able to lose the package and then just walk away. If I order something online from a retail store, I expect the retailer to make sure the package gets to me. If I don't receive it, I'm going to ask for a refund or tell my credit card to issue a charge back. No?

I have received some shipments that looked like they were packed by adolescent chimpanzees. In fact, just today I received a knife that was put in a manila file folder and then the edges were wrapped-up in tape. The buyer has no idea how carefully the seller has wrapped the package and it is not clear to my why the buyer should be required to purchase additional insurance to make-up for a seller's cheap & lousy packaging.

I am REALLY not trying to start a fight - I just want to understand the thinking on all sides - REALLY!!

I'm a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge fan of ebay, as you all know. I have no problems.

I do not recommend saying the normal horse pucky.....you must be 18, blah blah, seller not responsible....blah blah, buyer must do this blah blah.
I don't bog my listings down with that pucky because no one reads it.....or cares.
If the post office loses it, file a claim, refund the buyer, post office will refund you. simple.

I offer 30 day refund because it makes me a better seller....hey, whatever it takes. If you're sending it back after 30 days, I'll relist it and sell it
for more.....

Lowest fees on the Internet.....................bonus, bonus coming......with the hugest amount of visitors. For classic pocket knives there is no other place to sell. And 10% is smidgeling for the traffic they bring in.

I think the two statements in quotation marks in Mike's original post are directly related to the fact that most Ebay purchases are done through Paypal.

You can't say you're not responsible once the USPS takes possession because Paypal will hold the seller responsible if the package gets lost or stolen whether the seller likes it or not. The buyer will get reimbursed for the purchase through Paypal but the seller will need to file a claim with the PO to get reimbursed. If the seller didn't purchase insurance he/she has no protection.

The buyer doesn't need insurance because Paypal is his/her insurance. Insurance protects the seller and Paypal protects the buyer.
