Case Folding Hunter

Post by just bob »

I've been looking this knife over. A knife with faded handles on one side isn't all that uncommon, but this looks extreme. The pin on the top end bolster looks like steel and has been peened on quite a bit and I think is a replacement. The bottom end and rocker pin look fine. If the knife has been taken apart it isn't obvious. Also is the back bone and the front pakkawood? I'd like to hear some comments.

Bob:

I am certainly no expert here, but that knife looks suspect to me for one reason: the blades are reversed. In my own personal opinion, that knife has most certainly been taken apart. Go to eBay and type in "Case Folding Hunter" in the search box and start looking at the photos of all 2-blade Hunters. You'll see that the blades on every one of them are the same: they're in the opposite order.

I also believe that based on what I see, those blades will have some type of wobble and probably mediocre snap at best.

For my money, I'd buy one from a seller that has a better knife, clearer photos, and a much better description.

Bob the knife has definitely been apart. Not only are the blades reversed but the secondary blade has a extra nail nick. One on each side. The main blade is also short. A good knife mechanic could switch the blades back but if it were me I would look for a nicer example. There are several on eBay right now. As far as the scales being bone or wood. I have seen bone and delrin fade ,but me personally, I have never seen wood fade like that. So I would say maybe the faded scale is bone with wood on the pile side maybe. And I am just guessing here. The pictures are not real good either.

I went back and looked at the pictures again. I believe bone scales with the mark side being faded. Just my opinion.

I agree that the blades in this aren't right. There are a lot of issues, however you don't have to take the knife apart to flip flop the blades. You need only remove the top pin and the blades are free. If you look closely the center pin is spun and sure looks factory, though it may not be? Also the pin on the bottom end is n/s and finished out right. If you had taken the knife apart why would you finish the bottom and not the top? That raises the big question on the handles if they are original what happened. Looks like the top is bleached pakkawood and the back is bone? Can you bleach bone and get this result? I can't even tell is the shield a glue in? Appreciate the comments.

Bob you are right on one pin to switch the blades. It looks like the bolster hole may need some tlc. Also in your pic, as it is a little clearer than the eBay pic, if you enlarge it there seems to be a pin crack at the center pin. To me that suggests bone. From looking I think both are bone. Just the mark side is faded like it was displayed in sunlight or under a light. Just my opinion. As far as the shield it looks original to me. I may be wrong like I said just my opinion.
