I just encountered eBay’s Managed Payments program today when I tried to pay for an auction I won. It would not accept PayPal and wants my credit card information. Nowhere on the auction did it say that it did not take PayPal so I was kind of blindsided when there was no link to PayPal to pay for the auction. It said it would only accept a credit card or debit card.
Since I had never heard of this Managed Payments my first thought was someone had somehow managed to hijack or piggyback on this guys auction for the purpose of getting my bank information. I tried to find something about the payments on eBay but without knowing the magic phrase “Managed Payments” I could find nothing. I finally found the link to be able to talk to a real live human, which didn’t do me much good either because I think the person that only had one or two years of English lessons and any time I ask a question that was not on her script she went back to the beginning and started all over again.

But I finally found out that Managed Payments is a “legitimate” (I use the term loosely), eBay program. I found out from reading in some of their discussions forums that eBay holds the sellers money for two days before they release it to them. I guess that lets them make money on the sellers money for a couple of days before they release the money. I know now why I have never been, nor do I ever intend to be a seller on eBay. At least one eBay seller who posted in their discussion forum was not too impressed with the Managed Payments program. He wrote that he averaged 50 or 60 sales per week for quite some time and suddenly dropped to 20 sales per week when he switched to the Managed Payments program.

I did find out that some sellers don’t use the eBay Managed Payment program and if you look at the auction, right in the center of the page beneath Shipping & Delivery you will find the logos of the credit cards that the seller accepts. If they have the PayPal logo you can use PayPal if not you have to pay with a credit card or debit card or so the message said to me.

I got rid of my last credit card when they jacked up the interest rate last year, I just do not have a credit card, not even a gas card. I have a debit card but no way I am going to use that on eBay.

I’ve been on eBay for about 15+ years and have never sold thing, only purchased. I have a couple thousand positive feedbacks and don’t know how many sellers never bothered to leave feedback. I have bought a lot of things on eBay in that 15+ years (mostly knives), but I will not get a credit card just to use on eBay!
I will close my eBay account before I do that!
And I am sure that eBay could care less!

I was wondering if anyone else has had experience with the Managed Payments program on eBay? I am sure our members who sell on eBay have encountered this, I think I have heard a few rumblings about in the past. I’m just wondering how y’all feel about this?

Dale eBay must have changed lately.
At one stage it wanted all sellers to have a PayPal option.The only item that where exempt was things like cars, boat and items over a certain price.I am like you they accept PayPal or I will not bid or pay.I will not give my credit card details.I have a credit card stopped before because of the internet.
I have never look at the list of payment before you mentioned it.How many other eBay buyers know to look there.Sneak it in with one of those email no one reads about contract changes.It might be there in small print where you need glasses as thick as the bottom of a Coke Cola bottle to read.
It's another case of do as I tell you.

HOLY COW!! Your comments led me to go check out my listings and there it was. Icons for most credit cards plus PayPal. I have no way to accept payment by credit card. Not sure what I'll do if a buyer wants to use one.
I had 'fired' eBay a few weeks back but later had quite a batch of knives I needed to sell so I changed the 'firing' to a 'suspension'. Now, I'll need to put in a call to them and I may have to cancel all my listings.
It is just this sort thing that caused me to quit using eBay back in the 1st part of July and without eBay, I am not sure how to move a volume of knives.
After I call them, I post again.

Edit: Just checked all the items on my Watch List and all accept PayPal. Now if I can just remember to pay attention to that little detail in the future..........

Dale, are the ebay sellers wanting a CC or debit card for payment because they receive the funds immediately ? Whereas payment with PP results in a 2 day delay before funds received ?
If an item fails to arrive or is significantly different from description, PP will make sure buyer is refunded. This is very important when buying privately as well when you do not know the seller.
What happens if ebay item is paid for with a CC or DC and it fails to arrive or is not as described ? Will your payment be refunded ? Will you have to 'lobby' for this ? Will it take longer to get refunded than with PP ?

Scott - look at one of your active auctions, under payments it says you DO accept MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover and buyers can use these cards processed through PayPal with the fee paid by the buyer.

If you look at your PayPal payments made to you, you'll notice that some say "Payment Received" and others say "Money Received" designating some buyers use a PayPal balance to pay for an item while others use alternate forms like bank accounts or credit cards.

Basically you DO take credit cards but the impact to you is zero.

I bought a knife last year and after the purchase I noticed the seller did not accept pay pal. I had never heard of that and asked the seller what was going on? I thought all ebay auctions preferred pay pal payments? The seller said they had opted out of pay pal because the fees were too high and they only accepted credit cards processed through a secure site. Wow - I didn't know you could do that. Luckily they let me back out of the purchase without a hassle. I've looked for the pay pal log since then. With the emergence of Square and some of the other e payment methods ebay may have many more options for payments in the near future. We'll have to watch.

I got a message from the seller who suggested I send him my email and he will invoice me through PayPal.
He said "Sorry for the mess."

From what I read in eBay's Community forum, I gather that a lot of sellers are not happy with Managed Payments. One seller said now he had to wait 2 to 4 days to be able to access his money but used to get it the next day. Apparently people who sell to supplement their income especially don't like that.

The propaganda from eBay is that the benefits for sellers is:

1. One place to sell and get paid: manage all your selling and payment needs from within your eBay account.
2. Simpler invoicing of your eBay fees: all your fees in one place on your eBay invoice.
3. Daily payouts: direct to your bank account. No need to transfer funds between accounts. (with a 2-4 day delay)
4. New ways for your buyers to pay: such as mobile payments.
5. Be protected: claim and chargeback seller protections provided by eBay, with one place to manage disputes.

Plain and simple it's a way for eBay to make more money - once again at the expense of sellers - there must be a better alternative

I'm going to guess that happened in 2015 - 16 and pay pal stock was trading for about $30 a share. Today it is $88, while the ebay stock price continues to slide. I'd like to kick myself in the butt for not seeing this coming and getting in on it early.

I honestly can't imagine trying to operate in today's world without a credit card. There are many instances where a card is required and a debit card is not accepted (hotels, rental cars, etc). I have always been fortunate enough to be able to treat credit cards as simply a cash payment card. I pay the full amount each month so I don't pay credit card interest, and if I don't have the cash to buy something, I don't buy it. I realize many people are not in a position to do that - especially not small business owners. Holding debt as near to zero as possible is simply how I was taught and I've always lived that way. Our primary credit card is from Costco, and we get cash back on purchases and no annual fee.

X2. Plus, since I pay paypal with a credit card, I get a grace period on that of 3 weeks or more. If a seller thinks he doesn't want to pay paypal their 3% or a little more, he is forgetting that he has to pay the credit card company a similar amount. Paypal is a very good thing for the buyer and even better when he uses his credit card to pay paypal. I get 2% back on every purchase. I haven't carried a balance or paid a penny in interest for some 30 years.

X3...adults whose parents grew up during the Great Depression typically are debt-adverse and generally use credit cards for their convenience (and cash back) and not for revolving credit. My credit card has a death insurance policy that pays the full outstanding balance upon death.....now if I only knew which month that would be happening I'd max-out my credit limit ::facepalm Until then I only use it for what I can afford

Do you mean if you buy an item for $100 on ebay and then pay with your credit card, you receive a $2 refund ?
My PP account is linked to my bank account. When i pay with PP it takes the amount from the linked to bank account. Is this not the best way to set up a PP account ? If using a CC to pay PP, why is this a better option ?

Roland - They receive a 2% refund from their credit card company for the PayPal purchase is what was meant (I believe).
