question on a single action rev.

Ok, who knows what the best value is on a single action revolver. If you have'nt guessed yet, I want me a 6 gun for target practice and would be lookin for a holster too. The more cowboy or western like the better. I know you guys are out there so I value your opinions on this. BTW, gonna be cross drawin it.

Perry, you gonna get a lot of different answers on that question. I am a Colt man all the way, but they are pricey in any calibre. I have also owned a Ruger Single Six .22 and as Gringo says it's great and affordable.

Do you want large bore, or small bore? There are numerous "Plinkers" out there for $200.00 or less (in .22 cal) Heritage comes to mind, but there are many others. Colt and Rugar are probably the most popular name brand singles. Smoke

PS. you wanting a holster is great, but don't go practicing "Quick Draw" with live rounds! You will end up blowing off a couple of toes if it is big bore, and scream like a little girl if it is small bore!

ive got a ruger single six 41 magnum, its fun to shoot a few times, dont think youd want to be doing much cross drawing though

I've had my Ruger Blackhawk since 1982...a great and dependable firearm.
This fellow shoots .38s, .38+P, snakeshot, or .357 Magnum rounds...a very versatile handgun. If you want more of a western look, just go for the blued model. You may not find a blued Blackhawk any longer, so look for the Vaquero if you want "Cowboy" and blued.
I'd keep the barrel at 4 5/8" for crossdraw, but that would just be me.

Ruger Blackhawk Love mine ! Just like Lobos but blued. Would be nice to have one with the 9mm cylinder as well as the 357/38, a little cheaper plinking, But cant beat it for the money, Think I gave 250 for mine, you'll never find a Colt for that ! You can always pick one up in 44 or 45LC if you think you need more power, lol

Great guys, alot of good info and much appreciated. Yes I'm going to a gun show this weekend and hopefully can find something I want in a 22. Strickly for target practice but thx for the warning bout the quick draw thing. Hey Kelley, rig, Bill and Walkin. I am lookin at the Ruger Blackhawk for sure. Maybe I'll get to grip a few this Saturday and cam make up my mind on one. Any good sites for leather holsters and belts? BTW, HEY GREY. Thanks guys for all the info.

I never could bring myself to shoot a pistol round in a rifle, by all rights for best and optimum performance, that pistol round in a rifle should have a somewhat slower burning powder.

I did however take a Contender many years ago and chambered it for a .444 Marlin. It was an expensive conversion that I understand is now pretty available. I did pull the bullet, dump the factory powder and use a primer of my chosing along with a faster burning powder that would burn mostly within the barrel. The factory ammo, only about half (estimate) burned within the barrel. My next door neighbor and I went to RCBS and did all the chamber pressure tests as well as the chrono. He got me in to use all this stuff free. Well we did end up with a round that was pleasant to shoot, about like a .44 magnum recoil wise in that big single shot. Quite fun actually, a .50 S&W is something I regard as being unpleasant to shoot in comparison. Quite a thumper, it really killed those soda cans though. I wish I had my old notes, I guess on the barrel end that the .444 I used matched up well with the .50 S&W with much less recoil, likely due to the difference in weight of the 2, with that big .50 being lighter than the .444 conversion.

Actually my next door neighbor got me into handloading and wildcatting at 16 and he was very anal retentive. I at 16 followed his lead and had a lot of fun. So, on everything he taught me to find the pefect load and it became a habit.

For 99% I would guess that what we did was overkill in hindsite but, it sure was fun, great memories! I had a Remington 7400 in a 30.06 and for a semi, it was just a tack driver with a load I developed. I stopped hunting when 400 yard shots became mundane. I always kept it zeroed in at 300 yds, about 3 inches high at 100 yds and I shot at LEAST 3 times a week and sometimes more. I did have to rebarrel it once and it shot even better with another load. The brushbuster to have was the Remington 788 which was about $140 with a scope in 72 or 73 I think. The gun shot as good as the Remington 700 at a bargain price. They quit making it as it affected the 700 sales - I hear. With all the ammo out there today for the .06 you can find a perfect load right off the shelf.

I only wounded 1 deer with that 7400, tracked it all day, made my way back to camp mostly in the dark. I have no idea how many animals I shot with that, but between deer, pigs, and bear I'd bet the number approaches 100. I shot and butchered many feral hogs that I gave away to locals that were money poor and land rich. The limit at that time for pigs was 1 a day, every day of the year. I got into some of the best hunting that way and had great sucess as an archer also.

Goodness, that's a long one Kaleb. Like it though. Didn't have much luck yesterday on a six shooter, the ones they had were all used and in poor and beyond condition.
