Me and a younger woman.......

Post by Colonel26 »

Been hanging out with this good lookin girl today! Lol

She’s one out of three litters of English Shepherd farm dogs that we had right before Christmas (my male dog broke through a woven wire fence and got to all three females in ONE NIGHT). Most of the pups are gone, but this little girl will probably stay.

Here’s her 8 month old half brother. He’s a hoss. We’re working on the last of his commands before he really starts herding. The dern dog is most likely smarter than I am. Sometimes I don’t know who’s training who.

Beautiful dogs.

Do you use voice or whistle commands?

Just voice for now. Most everything we need to do is in the barn lot or in the barn. We may do some whistle commands later, I don’t really have any experience with those.

I have seen trials of sheep herding dogs and the only sound the shepherd made were a series of different whistles, done with the mouth, to which the dog responded appropriately.

It was fascinating.

So, I was just wondering.

Thanks Dale. One of her half sisters is out in your part of the country. A lady from Washington state flew in Christmas Eve
and picked her up.

Those Border Collie herding trials are pretty intense. English Shepherds herd a little differently, they aren’t as intense. They also calm down and quit when the work is done. Lol

Wade, beautiful dogs. I wish we had somewhere my Tucker could herd sheep. He wants to round up every animal he sees.
I speak my commands in German to my dogs. I know police dog trainers use Dutch around here. They chose that so crooks couldn’t command their dogs. I have seen those dogs responding to whistles too Charlie, it’s pretty impressive.

Our old male’s name was Tucker. I had to put him down earlier this year. He was a big ol good boy.

For those who don’t know what an English Shepherd is, ES, Border Collie, and Australian Shepherds all come from the same wood pile just selectively bred for different characteristics. I tell folks that an ES is a border collie that isn’t neurotic. Lol

What a pretty girl she is. Good company I'm sure.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Near LA there is a facility with a small herd of sheep where one can bring any variety of sheepdog and exercise their instincts. A highly interesting episode of The Dog Whisperer showed a big hyper-energetic Bouviers de Flanders. For the first few minutes the dog, who had never encountered sheep before, just ran wildly after the sheep sometimes snatching at their wool. The shepherd kept him from getting too aggressive and said that shortly the dog's breed instincts would kick in which they did. He left off chasing them and began to herd them, corral them, bringing strays back into the herd. Beautiful to see.

Very nice pup! OH
Deep in the guts of most men is buried the involuntary response to the hunter's horn, a prickle of the nape hairs, an acceleration of the pulse, an atavistic memory of his fathers, who killed first with stone, and then with club...Robert Ruark

Thanks guys. We love our dogs. One of my greatest pleasures is watching a young dog come to himself. That moment when it just clicks. Be it one of my hounds or the English Shepherds. That’s an awesome moment.
