Identifiy on Schrade Cutlery Co

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Identifiy on Schrade Cutlery Co

Post by tinroof »

I have seen similar knives, but it seems it is not common according to history of production listed in Schrade catalogs. By description of blades, length and style of the frame, handle material and the shield on the handle, I only find one knife like mine listed in Catalog E -- and no other productions in later publications. On page 31 in Catalog E, "2261" is illustrated and described to match my newest find. Is my knife a 2261, and if so is there a more definate date period it was available. Does the various shapes of the shields

have any meaning of identification.
This knife is 3 1/4 long, has wood handles, and tang stamping for 1917 to 1946.
I appreciate your research and support information to help us grow as knowledgeable collectors.

I'm not aware of any way to pare down the production period to a window smaller than what the tang stamp indicates. The pictures are a little dark so I may be wrong but I think you might actually have a 2262 (meaning ebony handles) there. Nice knife!

Thanks for your response. I have looked for some pic of cocobola and ebony. Ref I have seen aren't the same grain for either compared to these handles, the color on the backside are redish brown, and the front is black -- so it is still a mystery. Perchance would you offer an educated guess of selling price? Thanks again

1917 to 1946 is about as close as you can get for the range. Your knife indeed appears to be either a 2261 or 2262, 1 would be cocobola and 2 would be ebony. I can't discern from the pictures which of those it is.

Nice little pattern. I have a sibling, a 2264K. Same knife but with celluloid handles.

As others stated hard to nail down a closer date, sometimes if a knife was only listed in the catalogs a few years it can give a smaller range of dates. I have a similar Cut Co but with a nail nick and no swedge.

Nice knife John. What does that measure, 3 3/8"?

Thanks Paul, yes it is 3 3/8". Has had little use but does have some poor sharpening scratches.
