Another Covid 19 Boredom Project

This is a project I started and stopped a year or two ago. I fished this Kershaw Catfish N Mallard out of the bay. The metal that normally goes along the edge of the handle and begin to deteriorate and the Rosewood inlay inside of the metal had also begun to soften and slough away. There was corrosion on the metal itself that was beyond repair. I've always like this little pattern in since the mid-1980s but I had never purchased one.
I thought: "This is my chance!"
Well, the auction didn't go really high because of the condition of the knife so I got it at a reasonable price.
When I took the knife apart I discovered that the ring around the wooden handle was a very soft metal and there was no way to repair it. So I decided I would give it a complete makeover.

I took the knife down to the blank and cleaned it up. I didn't want to go with a handle without a guard or bolster. I made the guard from nickel silver sheet. The handle is made from snake wood. Several years ago I got an oddball shaped piece of snake wood that had a very beautiful figuring in it.
I decided that the only thing that would look right on this without putting the metal edging around it would be a snake wood handle.

I put the bolsters and the snake wood handle on this knife then designed and built a sheath for it . I had to design the sheath because the original Kershaw sheath was a pouch type sheath with a flap over the top. I am not fond of that style sheath so I made a fitted pouch with a plastic liner for a puukko style sheath. The leather is molded to the knife and the knife snaps into the sheath securely.

Here is an original Kershaw Catfish and Mallard and an original sheath. You can see the sheath is quite different than the one I came up with. Not to best sheath I have made, but I think it will work fine.

Oh yes! I LIKE that knife.... great job on the rescue!
That style and size of fixed blade knife is what I really like. They are handy and easy to carry.
Once again, I have to say.... I LOVE your leather work! Beautiful job on the whole project!

I do think the snake wood is just about perfect on this knife, the patterning on the wood is better than most snake wood.

I was not as impressed with my sheath. I haven't made many sheaths that are fitted with no strap. Think this is the first one. But with this knife there is no place to put a strap around a guard, and without a guard a strap around the handle won't be very effective. So the whole sheath was a learning experience. I do appreciate the feedback and that someone else can appreciate the were complaining that went into it as well as the overall result.

I have 3 knives with sheaths like yours. I carried some of Billy Watson's fixed blade knives back in the days when I was doing the "buck skinning thing". A friend made the sheaths for me and one other friend. He was very good at making the sheaths fit a knife. I love mine.... They have an older style look to them.
If that is your first like this.... then again.... great job Dale.
