safest way to knock out pins?

I've a knife that's got a pen blade that needs to go

its snapped of and the void makes the main blade unstable

I've no tools so to speak of but happy to pick a few up

any suggestions on the safest way to knock out the pins so I can retain the rest of the knife and reassemble it

this will be my first real project so be gentle

If you are planning on re-using the covers, I would be leery of using the razor blade method of splitting the pins. I typically use that method only if I am NOT re-using the covers. IMO, there is a good chance of cracking the material at the center pin by stressing the pin there with the razor blade.

When I want to retain the covers for re-use, then I usually drill out the heads of the pins and tap them out. Of course, there is always the chance of doing damage to the covers with a straying drill bit, but I feel more comfortable with this method.

Either method, good luck and go slow!

I usually use a small carbide ball burr to remove the head on the center pin and tap that one out then use the razor blade method to remove the bolster and end pins.
You can also use the small ball burr on the bolster pins and then drill them out. The ball burr gives a nice concave surface to help keep the drill bit from wandering (it’s not 100% but it seems to help me when I use the drill bit method)

See, you learn something new every day. I would have never thought to use a burr to cup that pin first. Thanks for the tip!

I normally use a small burr in a dremel or foredom to remove the head on the center pin on both sides of the knife, then split the knife apart with a razor blade.

So as an update

I now have a single layer Joseph Rodger pen knife

I will be carrying this alot now

Dales trick worked great on the pivot pin but the rocker pin wasn't going to cut. Ended up filing off the pin head and tapping it out with a hammer

Glenn made a good point about the razor blade method, it can cause damage to the handles. I don't use that method if I am trying to salvage the handles, especially old bone or old stag handles, they can be very fragile. In that case I drill the pins out or use a Foredom.

This was destined for the sales as the little pen blades sharp corner would rub when I tried to use the main blade

its a keeper now...

the only think I need to sort is the final rub down of the main pin- flutted bolsters are making it tricky
