How many knives do you pack for Vacation?

Post by thankgod4rkids »

Fishing trip is three weeks away. Need my fillet knives and Case fish knife. Better have my scout knife and bush craft knife. Always got to have a medium stockman. Might have time to whittle a stick so better have the congress. Maybe I should buy a seahorse whittler ::hmm:: . What does everyone else pack?

You pack as many as you think you might need for any occasion. ::tu::

Since I'm retired, live in the mountains, between the lake and the national forest, I don't go on vacation. I'm on vacation every single day. So my EDC's are packed in my pockets.

Even if I'm travelling by car, a lot of tourist areas have many locations where a knife isn't allowed; so typical EDC plus something like the Leatherman Style PS or Swiss Tech. Both of these have no knife blades; with the SwissTech pliers tool not even having scissors; so it's probably a safer bet to get through security with it.

Camping. Well, let's see. Given I'm miles from home, and even more miles from a place I can buy a good knife; and I am a textbook example of proving Murphy's Law. Thus, their ain't no overkill, unless I'm having to pack it all in. Luckily, we got our 4WD vehicles into the camp site. Last time, I had my Mora Clipper fixed blade, a one-hand opening Spyderco, an old Camillus-made Craftsman Stockman, my Coglhlan's Hobo Knife, three SAKs (Craftsman, Fireman, and a Classic SD that mostly stayed at the campsite for everybody to use to cut fishing line), and a Gerber Multiplier. Everyone else had several knives and tools as well. I mean, with what we had, there was probably 20 knives, three hatchets, and a Stihl Farm Boss between 5 guys. One had purchased a Gerber Multi-Lock just for the trip (and he only paid $5 for it at a flea market that morning!). And just make sure--you have a decent sharpener! I'd left my whetsones at home, and some of the guys hadn't used their fillet knives in years, and they were dull. One of them had a Gerber fillet knife with a sharpener in the sheath, but one of the ceramic rods was broken. We were stuck with one tiny Carborundum stone. I'm thinking about ordering an extra Worksharp Guided Field Sharpener just for my camping stuff.

So, to boil it down; there's a fillet knife and fixed blade for cleaning the catch; an old banged up SAK that mostly stays in the tacklebox, a SAK and good folder on me, and a multitool for fixing stuff, as well as a knife well-suited to whittlin' as well as a good hatchet.

If I'm flying somewhere for vacation I normally pack a Leatherman Super Tool and a Schrade 8OT in my checked bag. I take the Schrade because it's one I could more easily replace than some of my other knives.

Vacation, Whats That? I always have so much work to do for myself, family, and others that I can't wait to get back to my paying job so I can get some rest. ::dang:: If I was to go somewhere, not knowing the knife laws in states I may pass though, I'd have my 43ot in my pocket

I'm going to be driving my truck or my car (swore off of airlines except for LONG distances, but trying to swear off of that too). My truck and my car each have as a minimum a Buck 110, a Buck 118 or 121, a medium Stockman, a small lockback (2-3/4" or 3"), and a Multi-Tool (SOG) or SAK (ALOX Farmer). Add to that the knife in my pocket (normally a medium Stockman) and you can see I am well equipped to do most anything that needs doing with a knife. I also keep a toolbox and a small backpack with minimal survival supplies in each vehicle; I keep larger tools in the truck along with a spare trailer hub (with bearings and pre-packed with grease). I try to Be Prepared (I was a Boy Scout years ago). OH
