Schrade 8OTB

Post by Bert »

I ordered one of the Schrade 8OTB Bone scale Senior Stockman from Taylor / China. It did not turn out like I expected, the flaws are many.
Sharp edge on scales. ( I filed the edges smooth)
Pin crack on one scale,, very noticeable.
Center pins sticking out at least 1/16" and sharp. (I filed one down)
Spay Blade has up and down play.
Blade grind uneven, not very sharp.
And the Spay and Sheepsfoot blades are very thin, bendable thin!

Lesson learned, these are not what I expected.
Will send it to anyone who wants one. Not a lick of quality. I suppose it would work as a real beater.

That's sad to hear Bert.
I have taken apart a couple Old Timers that were made in the first year or two that Taylor had the made in China. They were very similar to a real Old Timer although the parts were not interchangeable because they had changed the lengths of the knives, the 3-9/16" were now 3-1/2" and of course none were made with the Swinden system, and I have not seen a single carbon steel Old Timer come from China. At first they did a fair job of matching the color of the Old Timer sawcut Delrin but if you knew what the real Old Timers looked like they were not very convincing. Now I can the ones I have seen recently almost looks like they've changed the color of the old handles.

It seems like somebody bought the brand, cut a fat hog, made their millions or billions and then sold the company.
I guess we'll see if it survives as a brand over the long haul. ::shrug::

Dale,
Thanks for your reply, it is sad to see workmanship sink like this.a profit motive isn’t enough to survive as a brand.
I will be on the lookout for the old USA Schrades, will check your store! ::tu::

Thanks Bert,
I only have a small fraction of my Schrade listed at any time.
Feel free to PM if I don't have the knife you want listed.
