Craftsman Knives

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

I gotcha - what about you starting a thread ( or reviving) on the 4 number knives and Jason on wood handles knives - I know I'd like to see a few examples ::shrug::

When I get a chance I'll try to put together a list of the various Wondas, Stratas, etc with pics. Maybe when they're all grouped together someone will figure out what makes a Strata a Strata and not a Wonda. I think they might have just used different words to create the appearance of greater variety in the catalogs. Who knows? But it's a good idea to give them a thread. ::tu::

This thread has a pretty good showing of the early Craftsman knives (both folders and fixed blades).
Most of mine are in it somewhere.

I picked up another Craftsman 9507. I posted in another thread about finding one with a broken blade that I cleaned up. I enjoyed carrying and using it so much that I decided I wanted one that was in tact. Not sure of the year, but this one has the Crowned (or gear tooth, not sure of the proper term) Craftsman shield. Tang stamp is Craftsman over U.S.A. 9507. No blade wobble with great snap on both blades.

Nice Jerry. That one is about 1/8" smaller than the 9507 of mine.

How’d I miss this thread. Here are the only ones I currently have (I think).

Three whittlers, the top two still have the ink stamp on the clip blade. The well used bottom one with no shield I carry.

Then there’s this old 4 blade stockman with killer bone. The gang stamp says MADE IN USA and if you look hard you can see where there was once an etch on the clip blade now long gone.

The bone 4 blade marked "Made in USA" likely had a "Sta-Sharp" etch along with the Sears pattern number.

That’s what I assumed. Sure wish it was still visible. Great old knife though. The bone is perfect and real good snap on all the blades. The stories it could tell.

Sears Craftsman 95228; same as Firebird (either SP-3 with sheath, or SH-3 without), a 3 3/4" closed lightweight lockback. From what I've been able to find, there are Craftsman equivalents of most of the Lightweight series. Note small brass engraving panel.

Full disclosure--I carry it a lot Seems that there are quite a few of them out there, and collector value is low. This was one of a bunch of lightweight folders bigger than 3 1/4" closed I bought back when COVID-19 was starting to really show itself and was finding myself at home a lot; and wanting some decently sized knives that carried well in sweatpants. Can't tell I have it on me most of the time, but it's got a 3" blade that is just thick enough.

I picked up an old craftsman a while back just cause I felt sorry for it. It seems like craftsman brand was usually bought by someone meaning to work. This old knife looks pretty good on the outside but its blades show that it was a worker. Cleaned up pretty good. It was a $7 buy it now plus another $6 for it to be shipped from Canada. Good snap on the secondary blades but not much on the main. Anyway it has a knice home now and can boor the other 72 clones with stories of what used to be.

Craftsman Sta-Sharp 9506, 3 1/8" 4 blade Senator (Schrade or Camillus ?)
The 4 blade Senator is my favorite of all patterns. Took a lot of cutlering skill to fit 4 blades tightly together with no rubs.

Here are two 4 blade Utility knives, both marked "Made In/U.S.A." on master tang, no other markings.
The one with the older tin opener with a thumb stud is 3 3/4" and is i think the older of the two. Steel liners. Does this style of jigged bone look more like Ulster, Schrade or Camillus ? And age, pre WW II ?
The other knife is 3 5/8" and has brass liners. The style of jigged bone handles is very similar or the same as on many of the Sears Sta-Sharp knives which were mostly made by Camiilus. Looks like a 1940's knife ?.
Any comments to help me further understand these knives would be much appreciated
thanks, kj

If I was to say, I would vote that knife was made by Camillus. That jigging pattern does look like their bone from the 40's. Steel liners would suggest WWII vintage since the brass was used for cartridges and shell casings for the war effort.

NICE couple of knives Roland.
.......And that senator sure looks a LOT nicer and works a lot better than the ones we have in congress right now.

Which knife are you referring to ? The one with the tin opener with a thumb stud ?
The knife with the newer tin opener & brass liners has what i think of as "Camillus bone"

Sorry Roland.
I was in a big hurry this AM with all my replies.
You are right now that I go back and LOOK concerning the all steel knife....LOL.
The one with the older style opener.... that bone has a really nice jigging pattern. Could that be Rogers pattern bone?

I found me one ..., Admittedly the Main Blade spring is WEAK but that was described as somewhat weak by the seller. ::teary_eyes:: ::dang:: Freaking EBay sellers.
Oh well it’s a Stockman size and I love me some Stockman knives.
Oddly I don’t care for the Yellow Ones. Bone or TwoToned Delrin.... it seems is all I look for.
