The reason they look so similar is that they were both made by Schrade. The "Hammer Brand" is not an original New York Knife Co knife it is repro or "limited edition" made by Schrade. You will never see a genuine NYK Hammer Brand knife with a vertical USA.

Imperial bought the Hammer Brand name in the 1930s and used the name almost interchangeably with Jackmaster and Imperial. The tang stamp on the OP knife was in use from 1945-1955. Since Schrade joined Imperial, Ulster and Kingston (IKAC) at the end of 1946 they were related (and share a family resemblance) but that Hammer Brand knife was made at the Imperial Factory in Providence, RI, not at Schrade.
