Before and after EM. Dickinson knife .

My last name is Dickinson , had been wanting something from them for awhile , this was on ebay , was kind of rough , rusted , stained up handle , i done a little cleanup on it , would love to find one of there slip joints , but hard to find so far , i think Millers Bros . here has one ? Needs sharpened up , maybe make the angle better , ill let someone else do that , sheath was bad , i wonder if a buck sheath might fit it , or maybe someone here has something that would ? Would like to know the year , i know sometime in 1800,s to 1950 ,s but might be hard to pin point .

Likely no older than 1920s, when several English companies were copying Marbles hunting knives. The pommel on yours is not original, it has been replaced.

The brass but cap on end of handle ? How can you tell its been replaced ?

Because I am very familiar with these knives, have a few, have seen many. They usually had a stag or aluminum pommel, never a funny looking brass cap like that. It is incongruous to the rest of the knife. Also the pommels were always held on with a round brass nut countersunk in the pommel. Quite possibly yours had a stag pommel which cracked and became loose.

Thanks ,mine dose not have the grove in the blade like yours , i guess they made different style blades ?

Hard to say, mine and others I have or have seen all have the fuller, they are copies of the Marbles "Ideal" pattern which is a fullered knife. Now the blade edge on them as on the one shown in my pic should be below the ricasso a good 1/8". Yours is so sharpened/ground away that the edge looks to be 1/8" above the ricasso. This means your knife is missing a full 1/4" of steel along the edge the entire length of the blade. There were so many grinder/sanding marks before you cleaned it more that the fuller could have been wiped clean before you got it. Mine here has a deep fuller, these were hand ground and some were deeper than others. The top of the blade toward the tip of yours is re-shaped, hard to tell exactly what your blade looked like originally with all the grinding/sanding?polishing and re-shaping done to it. These had very robust blades, mine is 6mm thick at the spine so there is enough steel to grind out the fuller and still have a blade left. They could possible have made a copy of the Marbles "Expert" which did have a flat ground blade, I am sure I haven't seen every knife they made, but I still think yours was ground down from a knife that began like mine. Your photo looks like the blade is of uneven thickness and almost looks like there are traces of a fuller (blood groove).

You did a great job cleaning up that knife!
I suppose that since the pommel has been replaced, it is a 'customized' knife! I think whoever made that pommel for it did a great job. Like many here, I often wish that these old knives could tell us stories of what they've seen!
