What to do with users

I'm not sure which forum to put this so I'll try this one. What do y'all do with users? I bought a bunch of users of all conditions. Some really good just a little blade rub down to some that have seen better days to say the least. Thoughts?

Oil em up, sharpen them and pack them. That’s what I’d do with any that appealed to me. The others I’d offer for sale or trade.

I use some, gift some, trade some and sell a few but mostly just keep them.

Most of what I buy are users, as they are what I can afford. In my opinion, carry them. They aren't pretty, but they get the work done. I buy boxed and mint loose knives to collect, and typically, if I don't already have that pattern in used condition, I buy one as soon as I can. Mine range from Chinese, all the way up to a few older, beat-up Queens and Cases. Most are Camillus and Schrade, followed by Imperial shell-handle knives. I buy all my Rough Riders for use as users. That's the bulk of the China-made ones.

That is exactly what I was going to suggest. What may be a POS for you could be a gem in the raw for another,and
vice versa.

Define a bunch. A bunch can be four or five or it can be a wash tub full. I think quantity is relative to any reasonable suggestion.

I was more curious about how he defines "user."
And how bad is a knife that "seen better days"?

User - no broken blades, more than 50% of blade remaining on all blades, all blades remain secure in the open and closed positions, no blade wobble, handles are complete, little to no rust, minor pitting. But that's me. Even some of those things are subjective.

A while back I gave about 20 “users” of various brands to a local Boy Scout troop. I gave them to the Scoutmaster to distribute as he saw fit (to scouts earning their Tot’n Chip or others qualified but who don’t have a knife). They were various patterns (not scout patterns) but were functional users with plenty of life left. The scouts were thrilled to get them.

I am an avid knife collector. At one time i had over 10,000 knives. The majority ( ~ 80% or more) had been used. There is nothing wrong with collecting used knives as long as you are somewhat selective and avoid those that have serious damage or no snap or significant blade play. An advantage, as has been mentioned above, is the price is but a fraction of what a minty example would cost, and they are unlikely to be 'fakes', i.e. worked on after leaving factory to make it look to be in as new condition.
The low cost allows you to get a lot of knives of many different brands, patterns and country of origin that then serve as a reference of a wide variety of 'correct' knives.
I too am continually gifting these to friends, children and strangers. Guy brought me a big load of manure, i paid his asking price and then gave him a good knife. Made him feel good & appreciated and this also gives me a good feeling.
The downside is that only a few collectors are interested in used knives so when it comes time to sell you will be lucky to get back half of what you paid. But this is the cost of having many years of discovering so many fine knives and making a lot of friends along the way.
The only 'rule' in knife collecting is: collect the knives that appeal to you. If used knives appeal to you then these are the ones for you to collect.

honestly, I have no use for worn out or hard used knives. If I came across a pile of them somehow, I would put together one great big auction on eBay and take whatever they bring as "free money", and buy some knive(s) you really want with whatever $$ you get. Problem of what to do with knives you don't really want ... 100% solved.

I enjoyed Kootenay Joe's post: I too enjoy used knives. Use them. Gift them. Trade them. Collect them. If that makes you happy, then you paid a small price for happiness.
If they are in too bad of shape, You can always send them to me, and I will use them for parts!
(Assuming that work slows down a little. I haven't done any knife work in a while...)

In that case, I’d say pick the good ones you might want to carry and either sell or give away the rest!
