"No. 6 Sheffield Steel" - "Joseph Rodgers" folding bowie??

Post by 56Dodgers »

I've asked the seller some pointed questions, but so far, no response.

The description (currently) clearly says: "made in Sheffield, England". I've seen lots of these over the years, but many are not etched/stamped with the JR logo like this one is. Check out the return policy on this one.

Currently bidding at $80+ USD with a little over a day to go... I suppose these are beginning to be collectibles in their own right at this point.

Definitely another Rodgers fake from India. I think the bidders think it is a real J Rodgers knife, I doubt folks are really collecting these. Seller also has an A&F steak knife with a sheath and calling it a hunting knife.

Can an item like this be reported to eBay? I mean, it does say Joseph Rodgers on it. Who will be the judge?

The people in India really liked British knives which came with the 'British Invasion' of about 300 ? years ago. Some Indian manufacturers (backyard forge or factory) made approximate copies of the vintage Sheffield knives and marked with the name of their favorite manufacturer, Jos. Rodgers & Sons. I think the idea was to fool the locals into thinking they were buying a fine Sheffield knife. Now with the internet these old India made knives are having a resurgence.
Ebay does not get involve because a knife is fake. Nor should they. It is up to the buyer to decide if he wants a knife or not. With online knife forums, expert advice is available, as is incorrect advice.
There is always more to learn about 'knives'. It is a hobby that never gets boring.

Yeah, its just discouraging to think that a younger or inexperienced collector thinks they are getting something they are not.

The first "Sheffield" knife I ever bought was a little rough black IXL penknife. Bought it from good ol' Mr. Jerry Skelton back in the early 90's. I loved talking to Mr. Skelton about knives and listening to his stories. I'm pretty sure I still have that knife somewhere. Either way, that was what got me started on them.

Come to think of it, Jerry connected me to a gentleman in Pennslyvania, first name Don I believe. Don sold me some knives as well, including a counterfeit Case tested stockman. However, I knowingly bought it as a counterfeit and he sold it as such. I don't think he really wanted to sell it to me, but I was so anxious to see a counterfeit knife after reading about them in Jim Parker's Guide that I practically begged him to sell it to me. I think he was concerned I would sell it as genuine and it would get back to him somehow. Well, 25+ years later, and I still have it. I sharpened it up and carried it for while, too. Looks like it was made from an old Queen knife. Very similar long tail C cold stamp (and on all three blades at that) that I've seen on lots of counterfeit Case knives on eBay over the years. Someone was churning them out, the tang stamps are too similar to be the work of many people. At least that's my opinion.

Anyway, this "No. 6 Sheffield Steel" thing kinda pissed me off. If someone knows what it is and just really wants it, great. But I don't feel convinced of that.
