Bonestag

What do you guys think of bonestag? I decided to carry this Teardrop today. Sometimes I wonder
if I should have waited longer to get it in real stag. Don't get me wrong- the knife has very good
fit and finish, excellent snap.

Is Case the only company that commonly offers knives in bonestag?

More important, what do you think of bone stag? If you like it that is the important thing. I think that knife looks good.

Some of the Case bonestag looks really good, but some doesn't.
I don't know how common it is, but I have 2 Queens with bonestag.
I will post pictures later.

I'm with David. I've seen some that I like the looks of, some I don't.
Bonestag is one of those that I refuse to buy unless I can see and/or hold the very knife I'm going to buy.
But as doglegg said, the important question is, do you like it?

I like it. I wouldn't hesitate to own a Case with 6.5 Bonestag. It's very durable and looks good.

I own two knives with the bone-stag. A Russlock and a stockman. I liked how they looked and felt in the hand which was why I purchased them. The bone-stag provided a surface (traction) that was not as slippery as bone, and was a little more affordable than stag. Honestly most of the stag I have seen from Case these days has been underwhelming to say the least. I like stag that's thick and has texture and bark, but Case grinds a lot of it off. At least with the bone-stag you still have those knurls.

I like it. I assume from your picture you’re asking about Case “6.5” Bonestag. I’ve seen some that looks so much like real stag I had to look twice.

Many other manufacturers called jigged bone “Bonestag” in their catalogs. It was jigged and dyed differently than the current day product from Case, which I think is why Case typically refers to it as “6.5 Bonestag”.

I like almost all bone handles regardless of maker.

I like it, and I agree with the others that it all depends on the specific knife. The only thing that I don't like is just that I would prefer if the mfrs didn't try to use misleading names when they produce materials that are not what they appear to be. We have bone that looks like stag, and we have synthetics that look like bone. That's fine - but I wish they didn't use "stag" in the name, just as I wish Camillus had not used "brownstag" & "Cabone".

It bugs the heck out of me when I see an ebay listing that says "stag handles" and the picture of the tang clearly shows it is a 6.5 knife.

I like Case's 6.5 Bone Stag enough that I bought 3 knifes with it. The examples I've noticed that could be confused with real stag were on older knives from when 6.5 Bone Stag was still new. Unfortunately mine are all newer and could not be confused with real stag. That's fine. 6.5 Bone Stag is artistic in its own way.

I do prefer Queen's old black on white stag bone but Queen prices have gone through the roof. Queen's black on white stag bone like edge213 posted two pictures of was mostly or completely superseded by Amber Cut Stag Bone which I also like, just not quite as well.

Case has another version of bone decorated to look more like stag than 6.5 Bone Stag. Maybe it was introduced more recently than 6.5 Bone Stag. I do not have an example and do not remember what Case named it.

I do not have a "Bonestag" knife in my collection.
However, I do like the ones that are being posted.

Just for a comparison with the one ~Q~ has. As has been said, sometimes it's great, sometimes it's passable, sometimes it's meah and sometimes the knife needs to be rehandled. To my eye, this one is meah.

I can't add more than what has been posted on Case 6.5 Bone Stag other than I do think they are doing a better job on it now than when Case first started. Some of the earlier handles were more white. But some of the later ones seem to have a bit of different toasting to them.

Personally I like the feel of it, and the aesthetics. To me it is just another jigging method of bone and not a replacement for stag.

I only have three Case brand knives that are the 6.5 Bone Stag. Two are 2017 Russlocks, and there is not a difference in the coloration. One I picked up from a Case Display in a local hardware store in my town. The other I ordered from Shepard Hills. One for my EDC rotation and the other kept in the box.

The other is a 2020 Case 6.5207W that I ordered this year.

I like the Case bone stag on most knives, there are some that don’t pass muster. My personal favorite is Amber Bone Stag. Here are some examples from 3 different companies. 1st Canal Street made Rigid knives. 2nd is by GEC and last is a Moki Kronos in Amber bone stag.
I can’t remember if Case uses Amber Bone Stag or not, nothing comes to mind from my collection where they did.

The colors look about the same to me. Same dyes, different jigging patterns.
