Keith Emerson stabs organ

Post by Doc B »

Saw this on a Facebook group. I was an ELP fan and never knew this. Once upon a time, rock had a fad for destroying instruments.
Here, Keith Emerson, of Emerson, Lake and Palmer has a bit of an unconventional performance. He was a keyboard prodigy. Warning...some of you will find this cringeworthy...but, in the interest of knife history...it deserves a place. Ha!

Pretty sure, it would be hard to find a rock band, of the era, that wasn't. Not sure how much he could do, on stage, and maintain the technical proficiency he exhibited. This clip doesn't remotely exhibit his talents. He was a mix of rock and classical...just when synthesizers were coming out. Today, the synthesizer sounds pretty dated...but; in those days, he was jaw dropping to most musicians. I was in the high school band, at the time. He and Rick Wakeman (of Yes) were the keyboard prodigies of their era, that we all had on vinyl. A quick Google of best keyboard players of all time, puts him in the top 5 pretty frequently and top 10 pretty often, too.

I would think drugs were definitely involved!

Destroying instruments was certainly a fad, of the era...by many bands.
Here's Something a little more representative of his talents. I mainly posted, because of the knife connection. Hate to leave Keith hanging out there like that. I think even the classically trained keyboardists can appreciate this. No real cringeworthy moments.

Yes, ELP were awesome. Yes, prog-rock and drugs go well together.

All of that was in the script. He wasn't randomly and insanely stabbing the instrument. He was using them as wedges to hold down certain keys so he could play other parts. It was part of the show. No instruments were harmed in the making of this film lol
I don't always respond to great posts but I always appreciate seeing them. Thanks for posting! ::tu::

At first I didn't know that you meant his musical instrument.
