Hello Friends,

Can anyone tell me anything about this axt head? Or it's stamps? Found it on the bay & it just caught my attention. Probably because of the stamped acorn & oak leaf.

It's described that the blade width is 10.8cm or 4.25 inches & the total highth from blade to hammer head is 22 cm or 8.66 inches. And it weighs 1277 gramms.

One stamp shows an acorn & oak leaf along with something else that I can't make out.
The other one on the flip side is a number. ( 60212 )

Any information is appreciated. Thanks!

Tom, going to throw this out there. It looks like a Roofers shingle hammer ,similar to what my grandfather used to install cedar shake shingles . He would use axe head for splitting shingles and hammer head for nailing. We may still have it and will look around. Maybe way off but it was my first thought .

Appreciate your input my friend! Never would have thought of that. Thanks! Seems like a good guess to me. If that were not the intended use, it sure would be a possable use for it. Any ideas why it has a round hole in it?

Maybe for setting your nail? Like you could lay a shingle on it, then use a second to drive a nail through the shingle so that it protrudes through the back of the shingle before you place it on the roof to nail it down. This would be a handy feature IMO. Especially when it came down to the "trim work" where two or more shingles might be overlapping. So that you could keep from damaging the shingles beneath it when setting your nail so to speak. But I'm just guessing here.

Edit: So..., I just Googled shingle & shingle hatchet & I think you nailed it. I also saw several of them with holes in them, whatever it's good for. And most of them had the "V" shaped nail pullers on the side of them as in GSPTOPDOG's posted hatchets above my post.

Thanks Buddy! Right or wrong, I now declare it to be a shingle hatchet or shingle hammer.

Brand new acquisition, Fox Trekking Axe. Made in Maniago, Italy. - Definitely NOT a wood splitting tool, but seems it would excel at chopping, carving, de-barking, food-prep, (choke up and use it like an ulu,) woodcraft, - and in a pinch, it would be quite capable of skinning large game, It comes as sharp as a good knife. Last picture gives an idea of the blade thickness, comparable to a woods knife. Haven't used it yet, will report back on what it 'wood', or 'wood knot' do. Sharp, shiny, pretty, - what more can you axe for?

I think the mystery axe is some type of working tool. I think a Fireman's axe would look more like the one below. Here are some pictures of what I believe to be a German or Austrian Fireman's axe (maybe 30's or 40's?), it could have fit on a wide belt on the outside of their turnout gear. If anyone has a better idea let me know.

Thanks! It is a big 'ol sucker. I' don't think it takes a standard handle size, so I have to find a handle for it once I get it cleaned up a little.

I see a lot of hand forged stuff on German eBay. I think the series. "Forged in Fire" has everybody over here in Germany who likes metal objects trying out there blacksmith skills. In the states there are those who like to get together & reinact the Civil War. In Germany they get together & reinact the middle ages. Everything from Vikings to Knights. Here at these types of gatherings, there are a lot of hand forged stuff for sale. Swords, Axes & Knives ect.

What a beautiful puppy dog! That GSP looks like my buddie's "Luke" , except Luke is 90 lbs! The black one is Lilah, she is mine and the others are my friend's GSPs. He has 4 and I get to to take care of them when he is out of town. His yard is pure "GSP pandemonium" when they are all out of the kennels.

That is a handful! But they are great to be around. They have become my favorite breed...and I also like German Shepherds, my family had one when I was a kid and he was my best friend.

When I found this knife it was painted all black. According to the old timers these were sent to the ccc camps back in the 30,s. They painted them black so they didn’t know what brand they were.

I found this looking at some small axes on a random website; looking for a very specific plastic handle hand axe, which I can't find anywhere. But, this did show up under hatchets. It is called a Lattbiel; or tiler's hatchet. I don't know why you'd use a hatchet on stoneware tile, but it's as close as I've found.
