I do not believe in "manufactured collectibles". Anything that says "commemorative" on it falls into that category. That doesn't mean you shouldn't buy them, I just think that in the long term, they are not nearly as valuable as the manufacturers want you to believe they will be. I learned this a long time ago as a collector. The item that is rare because no one bothered to collect them, or because they were so ugly that no one wanted them is nearly always much more valuable than the item that comes in a special commemorative box with a fancy certificate.

So - open 'er up! Display it proudly! Enjoy it!

It all comes down to if you're a collector/investor or a user. I don't look at pocket knives as wall hangers or trophies, but obviously, alot of folks do. So its just a personal preference ... can't go wrong either way

Morning Dan, agree with you on the preserving our history. When it’s gone ,it’s gone, the next generations will never get a chance to see,feel,learn,share this Cutlery thing of ours if it’s not here. What if the previous caretakers destroyed everything?

I know this, I don’t like it when my knives come in big tins - I feel the need to preserve the tin too and they take up too much space! I have turned a few into bulk storage tins by throwing away the molded plastic liners. As to your question Jerry - a routine, modern Case Knife will never be highly valuable in our lifetimes, so I open mine and enjoy working the blade action. OH

That's pretty much what I do. The Carhartt tin that came with my Mini Trapper is now a valet for my wallet, lights, and knives. That's where they go when I clean out my pockets on laundry day.

Technically, a can of Spam with the logo of basically what is dried and pickled fish, mostly cod. It is apparently popular in the Nordicland, and parts of the US and Canada with large populations of those of Nordic heritage.

Looks like it's a pain in the rear to prepare, unlike SPAM.

I would vote not to open it. For myself, I have way more knives than I could ever enjoy, so when I get one that is still in the packaging, I'd like to keep it that way. I know that doesn't fit into everyone's definition of knife ownership or collecting, so to each his/her own.

But with older brands, the chance that there are other unopened examples out there gets smaller and smaller with everyone that's opened. And while most of them won't be worth a ton of money still in the package, they will be more desirable for that reason.

That's true Glenn. It does guarantee that it's in factory condition and that is desirable to many collectors/accumulators.

Well, it showed up today and y'all wore me down. I opened it and took pictures. The pictures I took with my camera don't show the true tone to the red (actually rather pinkish/orangeish) but it's close enough for government work.

Picture taken with the cell phone is much closer to the true color.

They caught me off guard. Watching the tracking number it was looking like they might not make it until tomorrow. On top of that, the mail carrier came waaaay earlier than normal so it all kind of knocked me out of my rhythm. It all worked out in the end. Thanks to all for your opinions. They didn't really sway me one way or another but it did give me some insight into the way others think.
