What else do you collect?

I've always been a big fan of Native American artifacts. Arrowheads, Axe heads, etc...

I have maybe 10 at most. A few were given to me by a friend who hunts them. I bought the rest at estate auctions. I've searched for them also, but I can't seem to train my eyes to see things on the ground. (I really stink at mushroom hunting too ) .

I'd like to start learning more about these and get into collecting them a bit. (Wouldn't have to worry about rust as much )

Anybody collect things non-knife related. I've considered old fishing lures too, but I suppose the line must be drawn somewhere eh? ...or does it?

When my Grandfather died I got his old Zippos from the 50's & 60's and that started my Zippo collection. I have about 20 now.

i have collected indian objects for many years. texas is rich with things from the past. mostly found when i was hunting game. lots of slow walking and looking but it sometime pays of with a nice point or tool. knives let me do my exploring in a little more hospitable atmosphere. i just can't walk as well as i did when i was younger. i think if you like something enough to study and collect, it does'nt matter what it is.

there are many books on the native american tools. beware though, there are many counterfeiters in this field.

Man you really issue the great questions. I can remember going with my dad to a farm liquidation auction in the forties, I think that hooked me. I have a small batch of O gauge train stuff, a sizable group of nascar stuff, have my eye on a banner signed by Dale Sr. and Keven Harvick on the back from Ontario Speedway. Have about 40 or 50 recurve bows along with arrows, quivers and other tackle. Have several flint arrow heads and spear points came from living in eastern Oregon desert for a few years.
Ive got several R.R. lanterns and a treasure from England WW2 vintage,
a hand folded blackout lantern. It was used during air raids three sides have red glass with the remaining one offering light for kids to study by or for reading etc. I will stop after mentioning a few sets of spurs, cowboy chaps and several guns and swords. Okay adios for now.

A good thread to start.

I like old woodworkin, loggin, farm, and hand tools. They're hangin all over my back porch and tool shed.

I've got about 3 or 4 hundred old bottles. I think knives has sorta replaced that hobby though. I'll still pick up a rare or unusual one sometimes.

I collect old or unusual musical instruments. (Kids in my classes are facinated with 'em. I usually can fix up old clunkers and play 'em.)

I've also been pickin up wierd pieces of wood and cool lookin rocks for years. Got about 25 gallons of rocks. They're a little less expensive than knives and musical instruments.

I also collect padlocks. I have found them pretty easy to attain in good working order, and the old, real old mechanisms are fascinating.
Now for something completely different. Our astute leader, a few days ago sent me a young Aussie lads request for help in returning a glean to his high polished collection of, CORKSCREWS" I thought that was cool and unusual.-Glenn

Edit; According to Bill the Lobo's source it was probably made around turn of last century. Had nothing to do with US ARMY. They are becoming proliferent on E-Bay being touted as Civil War Vintage. Bills link has the whole deal. Evidently they were not a very secure lock. I would assume from what I read that even tho its neat its still a POS.

First of all, after thinking a while longer, I see your views and direction pertaining to the web site posting. I only want AAPK to be strong,,,,for us. I have seen your name and posts and I have learned from you. If for any reason, we're "not good",,,I apologize for any words taken offense to. I am doggone glad to be a member here, this is a friendly and non-crony place for knifers and I want to go back to back w/ members and never toe to toe, does that make sense? As for the post, I only felt what was in my heart, to me, it just didn't "feel" right. I hope you understand.

OK, WOW !!! as for the lock, I don't know now, but I will, I am at a show, away from my office, when I get back later today, I will do some research and send you a pm to prompt you to look at the answer for all to see. RU OK with that? If I cannot find the answer, I will consult "the experts" (mainly my step-father) and we'll find out. AND<<< I would love to know what it is, and I'd drool on it. VERY NICE .
WB, do you have the key for it? If so, could you please post it? And, by the way, great photos. I am initially thinkin' it's a WWI issue lock, but, thts just my first impression. I will return your post.
Thanks for everything, including a really cool lock. I don't have anything that nice, old, preserved and obviously used by the army. Having a stamped purpose on the lock is the coup-de-grace of locks. -Glenn

Well, I do a fair amount of diving so I have a collection of seashells, including every species of abalone shell in California. There is the Red, White, Black, Pink (corrogated), Green, Flat, Pinto, and Threaded Abalones. Today it is only legal to take the Red Abalone and only from the center of the Golden Gate Bridge, north to the Oregon border.
I also have an assortment of shells that are unusual, with large barnicles. I have some Abalone shells from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, the only shells I bought. I have some sea urchins, I like the internal shell they have once the spines are removed. My ofice is filled with shells, glass floats from Japanese nets and other marine stuff.

I also collect rocks & minerals and some fossils. The mountains in some areas were sea beds at one time. It is weird to see layers of sea shells in rock on a mountain top. I did a lot of backpacking & caving years back. Everybody always accused me of putting rocks in their packs to bring back!
*It is a Federal/State Law now for bringing rocks out of a cave, Bad Karma.

I collected coins & paper notes for years and still do, if I run across a U.S. key date or an U.S. oddball number. The Mint has got into the collector business Big Time now.

I collect old farm tools.......corn shellers, hay trolleys, log dogs, meat grinders, etc. Anything that helped an old time farm work.

We also collect trees, mainly native American. Better yet, Tennesseean. Yellowwood is one of my favorite trees. It has white blooms like large groups of grapes in the early Spring.
But, the Boss did make me plant a few Japanese Acers and two Chinese Dogwoods. She was talkin' about another this morning.

I like old and modern official Boy Scout stuff, uniforms, patches, equipment, books, etc. and of course the knives!

Last but not least, I collect bullets and shotgun shells. 45-70 GOVT being my favorite out of them all, but I like/reload an old 38 S&W round for target practice and GP.

Damn, its really weird as I also have a pretty vast array of rocks. Got a couple really nice chunks of Turquoise. Have some obsidian I brought out of Glass Butte in Eastern Oregon 20 years ago. They have probably made that illegal now also. Got some polished jasper, banded agate and others from the 70's. I really like petrified wood. Have little medium and big examples of several different types. My wife once made some comment regarding me turning into stone in a few years and she would roll me into the middle of the garden and sell me as a petrified human.

After having given it great thought. I just dont think its ping pong, Interest would have waned by now. Almost surely it must be watching bikinis. Only thing I can think of that men never grow weary of doing.
As I told my wife over forty years ago, as long as im looking I havent found it. Heck, forty years ago some of them even looked back.

I collect antique corkscrews and a few other wine related antiques. The corkscrew-knife, or is that knife-corkscrew, is how I became interested in knives in the first place. Most of my collection is packed and ready for my impending move. Just in case you missed some, here is a retrospective of some previous postings.
