Union stamp in a crown

The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

Union stamp in a crown

Post by chorizotaco »

Hi everyone

My buddy just bought this today and I can't find anything out about the stamp. It appears to be a crown with "UNION" inside of it, has anyone seen one of these and is the knife legit? Thanks.

Nice knife. It is not a crown - it is an outline of the continent of North America. Please refer to this thread to get more explanation and to see pictures of comparably marked knives.

Just as a historical note while these Union tanged knives are at this point rather rare (having been made around 1911 approx I did not look it up ) they are not impossible to find and do pop up. They have been a favorite of mine for years it is a great mark. They made these in many patterns. However among these are an even rarer version. They made some of the earliest dogshead folding hunters with this tang . I believe at least one other company produced a dogshead hunter around this time so I cannot say that they were first but they are among the first. Over the years I have collected three examples of these knives with the union tang and the dogshead shield. I have included some pictures.

I have the Tidioute book and looked through it but didn't find any date range for this stamp. One date range I saw in a book took it all the way to the 50s!

PAGE 15 bottom and 16 gives some info 1906 tidioute stamping dropped then they started using the union razor co ( which is the north american mark) ( prior four years both used. Actually they still used numerous stamps. After the move to Olean it was Union knife and then KABAR in 1951, This is all from the book. 1912 was the last year in Penn and then the move to Olean . it became union knife until 51. It takes a bit of decoding since one runs into the other. For some reason I seem to remember the north american mark being used about 10 years in total but that is from memory and I could certainly be wrong. LT ( all references from David L Anthonys book Tidioute brand pocket knives)
