E.W. Viking coke bottle hunter

The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

E.W. Viking coke bottle hunter

Post by Philwil1 »

Hey guys, I recently picked up this Viking stamped hunter. 99% positive that it’s a Union knife. Can anyone tell me about them? Rarity? I’ve seen union knives with Viking on the handles, or etched on the blade, but not with the Viking stamped on the tang. Thanks Phil.

I would say yours is a Union Cut product. Some are stamped, some are stamped Olcut with a Viking etch, some Viking hunting knives carry the KA-BAR stamp with the Viking etch. Not all Viking marked knives were made by Union Cut, some were made by Kinfolks, possibly Western and I have seen a couple by colonial. Value? Usually a KA-BAR marked one will bring more than a Viking marked one. You have a very nice example. Some folks prefer the ones etched Viking since the presence of a clear etch is also an indication the knife was never cleaned/buffed. They do appear on ebay, a "sold items" search there may give you an idea of present value.

PHILLWILL: Here's your twin. Can you tell the VIKING from the OLCUT ? The VIKING is on the bottom in Pic.1. The OLCUT on top is just slightly less white.
Pic.4: The Viking with its two OLCUT cousins.
Pic.5: Top: KA BAR, bottom: UNION CUT CO. (Match nick farther back on saber-ground blade).
These are great knives; proud to own them, as I'm sure you are. J.O'. ::tu:: ::tu::
