Newbie here, love this forum!

Pleased to have found this site. It's about just the kind of knives that have become my favorites!

I've been fascinated by knives for most of my life, but I'm not a collector. I'm more like an enthusiast who likes very high quality EDC knives. What got me started was when I was a child back in about 1962 -- I found a small wooden balisong with brass bolsters in the schoolyard behind my house. I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area then and the Asian influence seemed quite natural even at my tender age.

Later during the military, I went through an enthusiasm with tactical knives and all manner of one-hand-opening knives, from gravity, butterfly, auto and the rest. But the older I got, the more I found them unsatsifying to handle. I began to appreciate simplicity in design. I began to prefer natural materials such as wood, bone, horn, etc.

The other day, inspired from this site, I placed several orders for Case, Camillus, Northwoods, and Queen City. (I'm looking forward to the Northwoods cotton sampler, because I have never seen a blade like that.) These are the kinds of old-skool knives I like nowadays. They do the job, they look great without costing thousands of dollars, and last for generations. They suit my kind of mid-century tastes, along with WWII leather flight jackets, Red Wing or Alden work boots, and a good pair of fresh dark indigo blue jeans, not stone-washed or pre-faded, but still stiff and scratchy. Remember those?

I have a question about sharpening. I don't recall reading on this forum about Spyderco's Sharpmaker, even on the sharpening threads... Any reason?

welcome greg! sorry, never used a sharpmaker but i bet some of our members have. i use a lansky system to make precise edges and then they can be touched up on stones or crock sticks between sharpening.

I hope you checked out the stores here in AAPK.

Some times buying a knife that you do NOT have in your hand and see it can be a bummer. I am sure if you’re unhappy with the knife from any stores here they will make it right for you...

Looks like you have been bitten by that knife bug already...

Thanks everybody. Nice place here. Yes, I've been bitten by the knife bug. It's actually cheaper than the other bugs I've been bitten by in the last several years, so I think it will work out well. I think the thing to do is to inform myself and buy good quality. The info is almost as much fun as the knives themselves!
