895 vs 825
I have 2 Schrade 825 and one 895. These appear to be the exact same knife: same size and same blades. Why are there 2 pattern numbers ?
The same knife was also made as a 897UH and a 98OT.

I believe the 825 always had stainless blades and the 895 had carbon blades.kootenay joe wrote: ↑Sun Dec 06, 2020 7:28 pm I have 2 Schrade 825 and one 895. These appear to be the exact same knife: same size and same blades. Why are there 2 pattern numbers ?

825 first listed in 1953 catalog:
895 first pictured in 1957 catalog (825 also listed). The 895 WAS listed, however, in the (earliest available) 1950 pricelist.

The catalog pages show this to be correct. Thank you bcrr.
Odd that there is a 6 ounce difference in weight per box of 12 ?

Re: 895 vs 825
Bladecollectorr is indeed correct about the steel in the blades. Both patterns originally were made with bone covers, but not for long. However the antecedent of the 895 (and its kin, like the 899) were made for years by the parent company Schrade Cutlery Company. And there were additional variations, particularly as to covers. Also, a few 825s were taken out of the lineup and sold with only two blades through Norm Thompson. I think they called them K77s.

Thanks for the info, tongue.
I guess carbon steel is lighter than stainless?

Re: 895 vs 825
My guess is the two knives were packed differently and its the weight of their respective boxes that differs and not the knives themselves. The two types of steel would not account for a large varience like that. Individually boxed vs bulk-packed?1967redrider wrote: ↑Sun Dec 06, 2020 10:06 pm Thanks for the info, tongue.![]()

Re: 895 vs 825
Other versions of that knife in the Schrade Walden years were the 896K, which was usually the butter and molasses version, but also in a Delrin barnwood version. The "K" version was celluloid first, and then a poor imitation in Delrin. The rarest (maybe!) version was the K version, but with a punch (898K). And of course we know about the openstock 899, with a punch.

Thanks for all this helpful information. It is 'sweet' pattern which i'm sure is why it showed up in every 'line' of Schrade knives. My favorite is the Old Timer version: 98OT.

Re: 895 vs 825
The weight discrepancy might be due to the steel thickness. The stainless blades and springs might be a hair thicker than the carbon steel blades and springs.

Possibly Roland, you have two springs and three blades to take into account. It does seem like a lot though. I don't have any examples here to mic.
If I can find some I'll check it out.

Re: 895 vs 825
I weighed these three knives, all from late SW era with Delrin covers, mint, no oil.
825 open stock 53 grams or 1.86952 ounces
895 open stock 54 grams or 1.90479 ounces
897UH 55 grams or 1.94007 ounces
I used a battery-powered spring-actuated digital kitchen scale, not a laboratory balance, but I do have one of those.
For perspective, there are about 28 grams in an ounce.

Re: 895 vs 825
They basically all weigh the same as the tolerances of your scale is likely =/- 1-2 grams.

Re: 895 vs 825
I heartily recommend these MyWeigh, Triton T3 scales. Accurate to 1/100th of a gram. Guaranteed for 30 years. Cheap. Tough. Lid is removeable to use as a tray when weighing bigger items etc. 400gram capacity is enough for the vast majority of folding knives. Measures in US ounces, Troy ounces or grams as you prefer.
I don't own either knife right now so I can't help with the weight questions.

Re: 895 vs 825
Wow, accurate to 0.01 of a gram. That is a teeny tiny bit of weight, like the fluff in a knife well weighs more than this.
Could be used to deal in gold. I'm sure my scale is only accurate to about 1 to 2 grams either way of the reading.
Thanks for showing this scale. It's fun to be able to weigh small items so this would be the one to get if you don't have one.

Re: 895 vs 825
Jumped on AAPK for the first time in quite a while. Good to see familiar faces discussing the slendereeno pattern! I still have several of these, always a favorite. I remember having a K-77 new in the tube at one time. And mint bone covered 825 and 895 or two. As a tribute, I sprung for an example over the weekend. I don’t think I will weigh it though!
