What's so special about this one?

Post by jwwood »

There is a 1996 Case old pocket worn canoe on ebay mvpknife ID. I think this is Smoky Mountain Knife Works. The knife has 26 bids and is up to $1,225.00. I don't get it. Someone help me out and maybe link it to my post. Thanks jwwood

Nothing special to me.

Here's a link to, and photo from the listing in question.

I checked the bids. Seems that the three most recent bids were: $59 (which seems fair for what's being sold), then bids of $1200 and $1225. The $1225 bid was from a bidder with ZERO feedback, and the $1200 bid had low feedback as well. Somebody is a complete and utter moron, or something is more than meets the eye.

Looked into the bids more. Notice that the "i***n" seems to dominate the bids. I smell a rat. This individual was the first several bids, and the one who made the $1200 bid.

And note; 80% of this user's bids is with the seller of this knife. 12 of their 15 bids is for this knife. Also note, a username of a seller of an item this username bid on appears to also be a bidder on the auction mentioned originally, and the individual who made the second-most bids. So, shill account?

The seller mvpknife is SMKW. Surely they know this knife isn’t worth what’s being bid. ::shrug::

Bidder #14 put in a bid of $1200 when knife was at about $59. So bidder #14 obviously really likes this knife but why put in a bid that is more than ten times the value of the knife ? Then 5 days later bidder #0 puts in a bid even higher than $1200 even though he only knew that bidder #14 had bid of more than $59.
I think it is 2 people just jerking the seller around. Surely neither would actually pay the amounts they are bidding ?
I would not call it "shill" because this refers to the seller being in on it and i'm sure that SMKW does not seek out shill bidders.
Very odd indeed.

This is why I don't do E Bay, buy or sell, I trust a source like AAPK, where there are knowledgeable knife people are! ::tu::

That's what I was thinking when I saw this. And I agree with Roland...SMKW, I don't believe, would risk their reputation on something like this, if they were colluding with these bidders. I just can't see it...

Seems like an unusual knife to pick just to "jerk SMKW around" ::skeptic::

But it has sold...now we wait to see if it shows up for sale again if the buyer doesn't pay.

Here's a possibility that does not include disgruntled bidders. All you need is 2 people who thought they would out-do their competition and 1 got burned.

The guy who put in the $1,200 bid really want the knife and put a REALLY high bid on it to make sure he/she got it. His/her $1,200 bid is showing $60.

Dingbat #2 also wants the knife bad and decided to put in a bid that ensured he/she got it.

I think "really gotta have it #2" choked on a big one when the bid settled out and "really gotta have it #1" is REALLY relieved that #2 didn't bid $1,199.99.

Edit - we also don't know WHAT idiot #2 bid - it could have been $2,000. The auto-bidding simply took it to the minimum bid over the previous high bid.

My take is the last bid with 0 feedback is its a SMKW (in some way associated) shill intended to basically cancel out the obviously stupid bid before that - they knew no one would actually pay that much for the knife & they basically cancelled the auction.

I doubt this to be the case. SMKW is a multi million dollar business and they don't need to worry about one non paying bidder. SMKW is more likely to just watch and wait to see what happens. And SMKW did not know max bid was $1200. Only when the bidder with zero FB placed his bid was the $1200 revealed.
I think it more likely that both bidders are bipolar and in a manic phase because this kind of 'over the top' behaviour is what happens.
A psychologically 'normal' individual might bid high for something they really want but it would be an amount they are willing and able to pay.
I doubt either of these 2 bidders would actually pay $1200 or $1225.

KJ - yeah, you're right. The 0 bidder wouldn't have known that the stupid bidder bid $1200 until his bid appeared. Seems they had to be in it together ... OR ... the guy with 0 feedback has nothing to lose from a reputation standpoint - he could have bid $10,000 just to see what the guy before him bid.
