The Old Timer 2OT Family Continues to Grow!

Post by 58chevy348 »

My Schrade Old Timer 2OT family continues to grow! I have researched these knives for several years. I recently acquired the knife on far right with Winterbottom handles. Although I know this could be a rehandle job, I do know at the beginning of production, Schrade experimented with handle styles and materials including jigged bone. The wear on these handles seems consistent with wear to blades and the fit is very snug. Is it possible Schrade tried a version with Winterbottom handles? I know the jigged bone was never put into production.

I would say that winterbottom is a re-cover. I can't see any pins holding the covers on, that to me is a giveaway of an attempt at a recover.

Regardless, those are all wonderful!!!

I agree with the other opinions Schrade to my knowledge never used winterbottom. Now regarding the other thing you mentioned about the 2 OT having been made in jigged bone. You are correct. To my knowledge about 2 dozen were made. That is what I was told by Frank Giorgianni ( pardon my spelling ) This was well over 20 years ago. During that period of time I bought two of these jigged prototypes. I sold one many years ago ( for a fraction of what it is worth now ). I am including some pictures of it. It is new old stock never used. Since I had to venture out through the snow to my knife building I decided to include some pics of a 50 tys display case that I use exclusively for Schrade Walden bone knives. A lot of these came from Frank . aside from an 8 OT ( which is rare in original real bone, and the 2 other OT knives are all New old stock original Schrade Waldens. Since I am posting this it is a good time to mention a point of interest. If you look closely at these knives you will see that the jigging on some is a bit different than the old Schrade Cut Co versions. Sometimes the reasons for this are not understood. In 1957 Schrade moved to Ellenville from Walden. When that move was made some of the machinery (jigs) were either replaced or exchanged with those used by Ulster. It is close but it is slightly different. Frank worked in Ellenville. Most of these were made there. Now Schrade Waldens were made in Walden until 57. Schrade was trying to eliminate natural material (to go to the supposed wave of the future (delrin). However they did produce j bone knives for a few years in Ellenville early 60tys. Mainly to use up material they had in stock. That makes these ( bone ) the rarest of Schrades. Schrade cut was made from 03 until 46 approx. Schrade Walden until 72 approx. However the bone Schrade Waldens made in Ellenville were only made for a few years most collectors are not aware of this and may shy away from knives with a slightly different jigging that they have always seen. This small collection shows those variations creating examples and a time line. If the Schrade collection had remained in tact this time line and variations were shown in the displays. I keep this display since it represents a fragment of history other wise lost. Here are some pictures. LT

The man's name is Frank Giorgianni. He worked for Schrade for decades. He signed nearly every piece he did with his full last name. He was good enough to help you with your research. You can't even bother to get his name right.

I must say, IdioT632retard, that it is very disrespectful to dismiss someones name as being "too hard to remember". Food for thought.

Thankyou for the correction. I am glad to see what you took from the posting . I knew Frank very well and always had trouble with his name. He thought it was funny. Comments like yours are why I do not post much anymore. I thought I was making a contribution. Sorry. LT

Why the over the top hostility?? Rich knew Frank personally as well as Dave Swinden, Wally Gardiner and most of the folks who worked at Schrade. His collection is immense. Why do you find it necessary to throw a nasty insult like that (your reference to his tag line especially) over a lousy misspelled name? It's always been an inside joke among us.

What I originally wanted to say, before the nastiness poked up it's ugly head, was congratulations to 58chevy348 on such a fine grouping of 2OTs. No wonder I can't find one to represent in my pile.

I'm hostile because he abused his power in the most heinous of ways and then bragged about it.

He's someone who took pay and pleasure to torture people he was supposed to protect while taking illegal non-prescribed drugs while working as a LEO, according to him anyway. It doesn't impress me and didn't makes me laugh.

Maybe you should ask LT why he tortured those people?

I will likely be banned now. There will be no justice for the forgotten victims of this unbridled cruelty. Cry me a river over LT's hurt feelings.

Working in an asylum for the criminally insane does give you some unusual experiences. Like creative cuffing class that was when after some of the senior officers had downed couple of shots of thorazene to chase the previous nights hangovers. They would bring out a bug ( inmate ) and procede to turn him into a facimile of a pretzel using cuffs, camisol ( straight jacket ), and various other restraints. Then they would grade there work like you would a high diver you know like from one to ten . Then they would take out another drooling mass of humanity and try to beat the other guys score.

LT! I've only been here a few months, and very much appreciate your in-depth, informed, knowledgeable info. Please don't be discouraged by one off-hand, uncalled for, rude comment, as that is definitely NOT the norm around here. You thought right that you were making a contribution, and you have absolutely nothing to be sorry for. You sound as if you're a fountain of useful knife information, and I for one hope you continue providing it to us novice and expert collectors and enthusiasts alike. My sincere apologies for our fellow member's indiscretion, perhaps he hadn't had his morning coffee yet. Mark! 8)

B.C., why such a strong defence for the CRIMINALLY INSANE? After all, they're the bad guys, not LT, he was simply in the privileged position of being able to actually do some of the things that many of us, likely you included, have daydreamed about doing to some of history's truly evil people, Hitler, Dahmer, Manson, etc.! If you are having a problem with a fellow member, the honorable way to deal with it is an email or PM voicing privately to them your concerns, certainly NOT by publicly name-calling them or disrespecting their username. BTW, the last part of the slur of LT's username is particularly offensive. Let's let the other forums have all the controversy, and have this forum remain the best one on the web! If you're truly expecting to be banned, you could simply issue an apology to LT, and I'm sure any thoughts of banning you will be forgotten, or, simply apologize cuz it's the right thing to do! We all make mistakes, don't compound yours by sticking to your guns when you are obviously wrong! JMHO! 8)

Jason! I realize the focus is on the bolster work, which is sensational BTW, but, could we please see shots of the 3 knives you posted in the open position as well? I've never seen a Schrade with a thumb-stud, and I'd really like to see what it looks like open! Thanks! 8)

It's an earlier Schrade Cut Co. Although pattern number isn't present (or is worn off), I'm pretty sure it's a 2863.

lt632ret, thank you so much for the input. I always love learning more about these knives! Personally, I think the admins should block bladecollectorr from the group. Completely uncalled for. (And to all who have commented, thank you as well!). I just got another 2OT in, but it's in pretty rough condition. Will likely try to have it rebuilt in the future.
