New to this forum and a newbie to this new hobby. Just this month acquired my first quality slip joint, a "buy once, cry once" purchase. I feel sure everyone here recognizes it. This stays on my coffee table next to the sofa where I sit in recent retirement working on my laptop every morning and evening. The two vintage fountain pens are my daily writers too.

Whenever I have "stuff" to deal with I break-out one of my "click therapy" autos to play with, and I find I forget my troubles shortly afterward, so that's what's up today! Customs, in their infinite wisdom have seen fit to seize 3 knives I had coming from Mark(SSk), even though 2 of them having nothing more than a thumb-stud, and the 3rd only a nail-nick. For the 1st time since I've had seizures I've sent a letter of appeal to see if I can get the knives back, so that whole thing is weighing heavy on my mind. I feel I have a strong case for reversal because thumb-studs are legal to import, and a knife with only a n/n definitely takes 2 hands to open, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll report when it's all settled. Now, today's comfort knife! This one is a 9" oal auto/SS dagger blade with 50% top swedge, SS bolsters liners screws button and adjustable pivot, top mounted safety, and beautiful real wood covers displaying a nice grain pattern. Has a respectable weight of about 4 oz.'s, and came surprisingly sharp. Marked only with a stamp of a cougar or mountain lion and "Stainless" on the front blade. This inexpensive little knife cracks open with authority and locks-up solid every time with no blade play at all. Lots of fun opening/closing all day long!

Thanks Smitty! It's a very inexpensive auto, but they sure did it right. And I couldn't agree with you more, the fools running my country must stay awake nights thinking of new rules and regs to impose on us that make absolutely no sense, when they could be spending that time finding ways to stop all the handguns and drugs entering Canada and killing it's citizens, but noooooo, that would make too much sense!

I only started accumulating knives about 2 years ago, but have managed to receive 30 autos, about 25 fixed and bowies, and close to 160 usual and unusual manual folders from many parts of the world. With all the import problems I face I'm trying to scoop up as many of the models I like as I can afford before they shut-down the importation of any knives altogether. The knife community in Canada is just too small to mount any real resistance to the stupid laws my government has seen fit to pass. That's what makes all the ridiculous rules so stupid. I can walk down any street in Canada with my 17" Gil Hibben Toothpick bowie strapped to my leg and not turn a head, yet if I was caught with a 3" automatic keychain knife I'd be facing fines and possibly jail time. DUH!!! Something very wrong goin' on here!

I have this Gerber framelock utility knife to post as today's comfort knife! It's 6 3/4" oal/SS partially black coated modified tanto/sheepsfoot blade with attached flipper, SS 2-piece frame and screws with white linen micarta inserts, and pocket-clip. Weighs but 2 oz.'s, and sharp as the dickens. Displays Gerber markings and model number. This knife was not cheap at US$45., and until I'd handled it thought the price was high, but after feeling the quality and how solid the knife is the price made perfect sense. Great for opening letters or cutting up boxes!

This little Dr.'s knife was an inexpensive model being offered by Steel Warrior! When it arrived there were visible cracks on both sides of the honey colored ox horn covers, and the seller issued a full refund without me needing to return the knife. I put it on the display and was just going to leave it as-is, but, Elvis my cat knocked over the plexiglass stand it was on and the cracked covers disintegrated as it hit the ground. This happened around the time I was attempting to re-build a knife that came to me in rather poor shape, and I had some scraps of composite material left over that I had used to build new covers for the knife, so I used the broken pieces as a crude guide and shaped new covers for the Dr.'s knife. I really cheated on the replacements because the pins had stayed exactly where they were suppose to be, so I drilled holes and popped the new covers on and they fit nearly perfectly, albeit somewhat loose, so I dropped a drop of Super Glue over the pin and let it drip down the pin, and when it hardened the new covers were, and still are securely in place. I was so short of material that I had to use 2 different colors, black and white for the front, and purple and black for the back. I never was able to re-build the other knife, but being able to bring this one back to life certainly instilled a feeling of accomplishment on my part! Just a simple 6 3/4" oal slip-joint/440 SS drop-point blade with n/n, SS bolsters, brass liners and pins, and composite covers. Weighs about 1.5 oz.'s, and came factory sharp. Smooth walk and snappy talk on this one. One-of-two Dr.'s knives I own!

Mark, nice job on that Doctors knife ! Nice feeling when you can rebuild a knife,very well done . That Gerber you showed Monday is neat, never seen one . Bet it’s awesome cutting, nice blade style!
Thought would post my all time favorite and most comforting piece. This is one that started me down the Camillus and 72s and there clones . Got it out and playing with it a bit ,just think it’s the most comfortable thing to EDC .

Thanks for your compliment JP, I appreciate it! Yes, the Gerber is a handy little folder, and will perform just about any duty one asks it to. Comes with the white linen micarta inserts or genuine bamboo inserts. Been around a couple of years, I think. Really like the model you posted and certainly can see why it's a favorite. Beautifully weathered covers on that gal. I see plenty of company in the background too. Very cool!

I really just got lucky because ordinarily the pins should have fallen out as well when the ox horn broke apart, but the one's on that knife stayed firmly in place, and once I had the new covers shaped it was a simple matter of drilling the holes in line with the pins and then dropping the new cover over them. Probably wouldn't happen that way again in a million years, but if it does you'll know exactly what to do!

Thanks for your encouraging words Smitty! It sure does feel good to be able to do minor repairs successfully on my knives, since I really don't know the first thing about knife-making. Even a broken clock is right twice a day though. Maybe one day I'll have the required skills to perform re-builds, just like you with the Camillus 72 you rescued, just a beautiful job! And yessir, I sure do love those Dr.'s Knives!
