BONES BONES BONES

Thought this up as a photo essay on different bones and jigging. Just tried to show the bones without shields. I admit it turned into an an eye crosser !
Many of us can probably ID the brands by the jigging but that wasn't the intent. Just a display of my favorite handle material. I love pearl, stag, celluloid, ebony, metal, etc.,but, for me there's nothing better than BONE. Guess I'm a BONEHEAD. J.O'.

Thanks Steve. Here are more. If I really try I can almost detect patterns that are probably some cutler's personal style. Examples: the top rwo knives in the 2nd pic below. (Maybe I'm just flashing back to the 70's !) Very cool! J.O'.

Thank you for a very fine and interesting photo essay on a great topic. On using knives my preference is for smooth bone but I have always found the jigging patterns fascinating in their variety. Well done Ridgegrass.

I agree with you about loving bone handles - but I certainly don't have any examples that are as magnificent as those in your pictures!

Agree with everything reverand said. Jigged bone just looks better as it ages and starts to get the pocket worn look.

IVORYMAN: Fantastic! I was hoping we'd get more. What's the bottom knife in the next-to-last pic above ? It's got that "pebbled" jig that I really like.

FRJ: If you're talking about the first post, the left side is a very old Camillus half-moon stamp, "pebbled" jigging.
The right side is a circa-1860, Corsan, Denton, & Burdekin , Sheffield. smooth white bone.

The bottom knife in the second to last pic is the same as top knife in the photo above it showing other side. It's a 19teen-1920s Keen Kutter bare head. Got it for the bones. Glad you like all, great thread and great start. Thanks for coming up with this thread Rgrass, was a great idea.

Though I generally favor smooth bone on a using knife the one exception is Winterbottom. Ridgegrass, yours exudes character.
