USPS is a joke
I ordered 2 knives from a seller here two days ago. To my surprise this seller had them in his local post office less than 2 hours after I ordered them. In tracking I could see that the origin is about 60 miles from my house. The estimated arrival shown in tracking is three days. The tracking shows my order at his local post office 30 hours after he dropped them off. I’m guessing maybe another week if they don’t lose the package. If I order from this seller again, I’ll drive and pay him cash. Three days to deliver when it’s an hour and ten minute drive is poor. Carrier pigeon would be more efficient than the post office. I’ll stop ranting now.

Re: USPS is a joke
Best one yet, I ordered a knife from a seller 800 miles away. It arrived at a distribution center 10 minutes from my house. The package then went to another state hundreds of miles away before it came back to my state. Took about 2 weeks.fergusontd wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 11:11 pmTo mail a letter for a local address it has to travel 90+ miles to Columbus, postmarked, and back to be delivered in town. Bring back the Pony Express. It’s faster and more efficient.

Exactly. I mailed a package to an address right here in my own city. It traveled 100 miles south then right back to the very same post office that I shipped it from. Then to the recipient. Took 3 days altogether. He lives about 6 miles from the post office I shipped it from.fergusontd wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 11:11 pmTo mail a letter for a local address it has to travel 90+ miles to Columbus, postmarked, and back to be delivered in town. Railsplitter, that’s typical. USPS went downhill a few years ago. It’s been getting worse ever since. Fedex and UPS also are not as good as they were.Railsplitter wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 11:19 pmExactly. I mailed a package to an address right here in my own city. And very little is made in America anymore. And if it is, it usually is made of “imported components”. Virtually ALL American made knives are gone or producing overseas.

Yet PACs, charities, mass-mailers--they somehow all get to fill my mailbox full of junk for 11 cents a letter; or 50 cents for a packet full of cheap, crappy junk. How come they don't raise prices on them and not the consumer?

Good point Ferguson. And I wouldn’t mind price increases so much IF they would deliver mail efficiently. Instead, my mail goes all over creation before it arrives in my mailbox. That’s assuming they haven’t lost it. Why can’t they lose junk mail instead ?cody6268 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 2:07 pmfergusontd wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 11:11 pmTo mail a letter for a local address it has to travel 90+ miles to Columbus, postmarked, and back to be delivered in town. Yep.... I have been bit again by the usps incompetency bug....
I bought a knife from an ebay seller and he got it to the usps same day I bought it. It left that facility... (In new york....) and hasn't been heard from since. That was last Thursday a week ago. A whole week with no tracking movement.
Another government agency shows it's true colors.

That’s typical. My last purchase is not showing movement in tracking either. It’s understandable. It’s being sent about 50 whole miles. We should start a pool as to guessing if and when our purchases will arrive. The winner will collect enough money to buy another knife for USPS to lose or ship around the country before delivering it.Meridian_Mike wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 2:42 pm Yep.... Re: USPS is a joke
I agree,, the USPS is incompetent and it starts at the top level of management.
I mail something almost every business day, including Saturday on occasion. I pack my knives and print labels and pay for postage online. When my packages go to the post office I have some options. I can drop them into a bulk mail sort of buggy with a hundred or so other packages. Main advantage to me is that there is no line to wait thru. Problem is that about one in ten of the packages so mailed do not get scanned and buyers assume that I have not mailed their knife or knives. The next and best option is to deliver the package to the counter clerk or whatever their title might be. Sometimes I have a wait in line to do this but it works out best for all concerned. The package is scanned in my presence and I get a receipt.
Now the geniuses who run the US Postal System have determined that the clerks should not have to take time to do the scanning and handling of prepaid packages so the Self Service machines are, or have been, reprogramed to do the scanning and print a receipt. Actually, having done that a few times it works out ok, BUT today the machine is out of order or on tilt or something so I go to the counter where I am questioned 'how do you know it isn't working'. Man, that was a pisser.
Another scenario is that on occasion I have a package that for some reason or another I cannot print a paid label. Assuming that I have one or more packages that have paid labels plus one that is not a paid label, I am now faced with waiting in two separate lines. One to get access to the self service machine and another more serious line to get to the counter.
That is not good customer service, any way you look at it. Rant over!

Re: USPS is a joke
My most recent knife purchase arrived in three days after I bought it. One of them was a holiday and one was a Sunday.
Then there was the one I bought in November for a Christmas present that didn't arrive until January.

Probably due to lobbyists talking to politicians who dictate HOW the USPS is to be run.cody6268 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 2:07 pmfergusontd wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 11:11 pmTo mail a letter for a local address it has to travel 90+ miles to Columbus, postmarked, and back to be delivered in town. Yet PACs, charities, mass-mailers--they somehow all get to fill my mailbox full of junk for 11 cents a letter; or 50 cents for a packet full of cheap, crappy junk. How come they don't raise prices on them and not the consumer?
I've posted this before but people keep forgetting. The only reason the USPS has been loosing money every year since about 2010 is due to the CONGRESSIONALLY MANDATED requirement that the USPS FULLY FUND the healthcare and retirement system of its employees.
No other entity in the world, government or private, is required to do that.

Re: USPS is a joke
Sent a check in a regular envelope to a guy 150 miles away. A week later he called, said it hasn't got there. So I put a check in a priority box. The next morning he got the box, 3 days later he got the first check. I've not experienced any problems if I ship or receive a priority box. It's the only way I go. And don't ever purchase extra insurance. It almost guarantees problems
