last weeks project....................

Post by gmusic »

When I started this fighter I was all excited; when I finished it I was relieved. This thing gave me fits from the start, I still don't know if I like it. The grind lines are clean the photos are not.

It has a 7" blade with a 3/4 length false edge on top (it would not be false if I lived anywhere but in California).

The texture work on the blade still hasn't impressed me (like it was supposed to). I don't know if I'll do that again!

Hand forged from 52100, triple quenched and heat treated thee cycles. I won't put an edge on it until I get it back, I'm sending it off to Rick Garcia (rayban) for a sheath.

Let me know what you think!

Gary

Hi Gary,

Your work is quickly becoming exceptional, my friend. I have never, nor will I ever be able to forge a blade - but I'm pretty well convinced that forging makes a superior blade.

What I see on this knife, that I would change: Like you, leaving the scale on a portion of the blade detracts from it, to my eye. That stag crown would be kinda brittle on a fighter (you'll be using the knife for chores, a lot more than fighting). For the "art knife" look, I would put a little taper in that double guard ( ala' "bladecatcher" ). Personally, I would use a single guard, and maybe a sub-hilt. Even tho' sub-hilts have gone out of fashion, they allow a firm grip and are way more comfortable than fingergrooves in the handle.

All that being said, I'm quickly becoming your Nr. 1 fan ! When you get ready to tackle a Woodcraft pattern, I'll be standing by to place an order.

Keep up the good work, my friend

Gary.....WOW !

I don't often visit this forum...'Ya know I like them old knives best, but I'm glad I saw this today, and I'm glad I didn't miss the start of your knife making career.

I've seen knives by guys doing this for years that don't look as good as your's.

Guess we'll know where to find you when it's too wet to plow. ::tu::

Nice work Gary! ::tu::

What I would like to see you change on this knife:
1- The ownership..........from you to me!

Other than that, I think it is perfect!

PS- You know Gary, it is guys like you that make this look so easy, that make it so hard on those of us that really have to work at this!

Thanks for the comments and ideas guys.

I need this feedback from you all to know if I'm going in the right direction.
I will this week forge a blade and test it to destruction to make certain my process is correct.

Thanks again...................................
