Knife Picks are very collectible, their production goes back many year, many knife manufacturers are producing them even today. Most are very affordable. Personally, I find them rather annoying and cumbersome to use.
I do not "bite" or cut my thumb nails down to the "Hyponychium" aka: The Quick. (I hope you don't either.) Therefore, it is very seldom that I can not reach the blade nick with my 1/8" thumbnails.
When you find your secondary blade or tool implement playing "Hide & Seek" within the knife channels, it becomes very aggravating, even to the point that "Bad Reviews" are given at times to the entire knife in question just because one had no fingernails.
I believe the "Barlow Pattern" is a frequent knife that comes up with this situation of hidden blade pulls. Many "Slip Joint knives" can have this situation though.
I have a tool that works much better then (at least for me) the common "Knife Pick." It's called "Staple Remover," perhaps you have one in your desk?
I've had mine much longer than I can remember. It has a "Pat.No." 2033050 Made in U.S.A. First patented in March 1936.
I seldom need it, however, it's here when I do. It is not a pocket carry tool of course due to its girth and four pointed prongs, but how often do you even carry a regular Knife Pick around in your pocket?
So...next time you need a Knife Pick, just pull out your Staple Remover and gently close the prongs on the recessed thumb pull and your in business. No broken thumb nails, no scratched blade.

Dan, great idea with the staple plucker. Don't you have to be concerned about the teeth making marks on the back side of the blade? I have my own favorite little screw driver that I use when needed and it hasn't let me down yet.

Great idea Dan. I always have a short piece of heavy plastic about 1/2 in. x 3 in. folded in half. Slip it down in the well under the blade in question and gentle pull the blade out. Really comes in handy when I'm working on an old dirty knife.

Mark from SSk sent me an A.G. Russell pick that works wonders opening a shallow pull, and it's only about 2" and hangs on my keyring. Prior to getting that I would use an ordinary drinking straw, just slip either open end over the tip of the blade and pull up, much along the lines of David's folded plastic.

Great thread with great ideas.
My own solutions are dumbed down, I guess. I don't carry a knife with a troubling pull (often lockbacks, for which pulls don't mean much), and, otherwise, I often carry fixed blades which don't have pulls. I even (
) have been known to carry a switch. But I do like the ideas being shown here.
