A lack of common sense?

This looks to be in about the same condition as one a buddy of mine picked up at a flea market for $10. That's about what I'd pay, too. I would specifically state, that if it was a local seller with it (and ironically, Lewisburg is a little over an hour from here) I would specifically say "It's gonna take a lot of time and effort to get all that rust off."

You can get this same model from most Case dealers for less than that.

Are the handles bone or Delrin ?
If bone, the blades can be buffed to shiny and as the blades look full, it might then sell for a much higher price. Some people prefer to buy old knives with shiny blades.

Looks like it could possibly be a XX '40-'64 Red Bone. Still with that amount of rust, once cleaned off it will still be severely pitted.

Looks like it has some pretty nice red bone, with at least one pin crack on the mark side. But, just looking at the rust in the pictures, as Eye Brand Man said, there I suspect there lurks some deep and nasty pitting under that rust. ::teary_eyes::

That will not clean up without removing a lot of material, also the bolster are badly pitted. Pretty big pin crack. Harold

I was so busy looking at all the rust & bid price, I didn't even see the pin crack. Good eye.

Just me, or does this knife's damage seem to suggest it was stored near an outgassing celluloid handle knife?

Shucks fellers, that knife just has some light patina. It may even be near mint.

Heck, those things are going for 200 to skies the limit on the bay. I'd probably take it for 70.00 get that rust off of there, and throw it in my pocket. It's not even over though, wait till we see what it ends at. Frame alone is probably worth that, and someone will slap new blades in it, fake some tang stamps and get rich! The world's gone crazy!

For the selling price the buyer will get one good XX not red bone handle and not much else. Blades are corroded beyond reasonble recovery. Mark side handle looks to have several cracks at the tail end. Some serious neglect at work.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Well, I’ve been told I was full of something or other once or twice. But I don’t think it was beans or taters…

After reading this thread my curiosity was peeked so I went to ebay and searched Case XX Trapper knife and got over 3500 results. One of them was for a Case XX Trapper 1940-1950, red bone covers, MINT being sold by sportscolbs for US$6500.! Would someone please educate me about what makes this simple clip/spey blade knife command that kind of money? Like Jerry posted in the OP, "What Am I Missing?" Thx! 8)
