Odd Mark On SCHRADE Fixed BLADE,Any help???

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Odd Mark On SCHRADE Fixed BLADE,Any help???

Post by Mamoth58 »

Hello everybody...I'm obviously hooked on AAPK(with out dropping any names i've been to other"Blade"fourms&this is by far the best!!!) site!, as i have been searching for all my knives(mostly vintage pocket)with out too much luck but i found this Schrade fixed blade #493 but what has me baffled is the stamp on the butt looks like an anvil beside a flag, like a nautical looking flag.(triangle cut at front < )gaurd&some of leather/plastic stacking is loose...My question is or thought is:Did someone cutomize this knife&thank is their mark?,first thought was SCAGEL but not his mark(scagel-squiggel!)right?,it feels real good, handle finger grooves fit well.that mark was one of the reason i aquired it so does anybody have any thoughts(or ???'s)on this mark? knife it's self?? any and all info. will be greatly appreciated!,Thank's all!!!

From what I can recall of what was posted in another forum, the anvil was the cutlers mark. It signified that it was "bench made." A throw back to the old English Cutler's marks.
The first mark is a date code, indicating the year it was made.
Perhaps LT has the key to that code. He is the only one I know who might.

That is about all I know about it.

Mamoth, scroll down to page 8 on the PDF link below, it'll show you everything you want to know about the hallmarks (Dale hit the nail on the head). It's from an excellent research site ::tu::

Mamoth,
If you will email me next week (I am busy this weekend & will forget) I think I can come up with a pretty close date range on our knife.

Welcome to AAPK! This thread is about 8 years old. My suggestion: start a new thread and post pictures of yours.
