I'd gladly sit down to a meal just like Bro.Wade had this evening! However if I could choose the greens I would vote for Mustard greens. Turnips with the roots are good, collards are great, Rutabaga greens are really, really great (don't get them too often) and Mustard greens are best, to my taste buds.

We had a neighbor across the pasture from us that grew collard greens year round. He would baby the plants for several years, sometimes propping the tall plants so they wouldn't fall over. The stalks would sometimes be 5 and 6 foot tall. He would pick a mess of bottom leaves and keep allowing the plant to grow, he pinched off the bloom when they appeared to keep them from "going to seed". Collards are usually harvested by cutting the whole top from the stalk, wrapped with a big rubber band and sold at the market.

Our old neighbor showed Miss Joy how to roll the leaves up in a tight roll and "chip them up" with a knife for cooking. One time he was helping her clean some collard leaves and she started to discard a leaf the had some holes in it from a worm or some critter. He said, "No, don't throw that away, you just eat around the holes!" He was right, only the discolored (yellow) leaves would be tossed.

I’v had mixed greens before (mustard and turnip). They were right good! I’ve tasted a raw rutabaga once, it was really good, I never knew about eating the greens. I’ll have to try that.

Speaking of “greens” have you ever eaten poke sallad? It’s been a few years, but best I remember it was good too. My grandfather used to love poke int the spring time.

Yes sir, we used to eat Poke weed when I was a little feller. It's supposed to be dangerous when it gets some age on the leaves. I don't know enough about it to try it. We used to play with the berrys and get the red juice all over our hands.
Looking around for an old timer to ask about this sort of thing is almost a lost cause. I find it hard to realize but I'm now in that "old timer" category and I don't know squat compared to the folks I used to call "old timers"!

'round these parts it's called 'poke salad'. I've seen plenty of it but have never ate any.
I seem to recall something along the lines of having to cook it, or boil it (?) twice,
changing the water to get rid of whatever makes ya' sick ...

Them hole in the wall joints are often overlooked, went to one recently in Eustis FL. the decor was early whatever the junk store sold, but food wuz great in my opinion.

We used to use the same theory. Semi - trailer Trucks parked outside a 24 hour diner. Never failed. But sadly most are gone or have been replaced by a Ronald's or such.

Phil & Ken - thanks for the compliments! It's no secret recipe, but it is newly modified. Our old crockpot died and my wife bought a smaller one to save on countertop space, I've had to cut back a bit. I never make it the same way twice, but what you see there is 1.4 lbs of venison burger browned. Two cans of diced tomatoes - Hunt's fire-roasted garlic, two cans of Bush's beans - black & dark red kidney, one medium can (11 oz.) of corn, one tennis ball size yellow onion diced into medium pieces. Mix it all up with 2-3 teaspoons of McCormick chili powder and a liberal dose of cinnamon. Cooked on low for 5 hours (we ate it at 6 hours). I don't add any water (I drain the corn and the beans) - I like my chili thick. Add shredded Mexican cheese and a dob of sour cream prior to eating. I vary the beans and diced tomato's all the time vis-à-vis brand and flavoring. BB

Making chili the same way twice is difficult for folks who enjoy cooking. Kinda like Miss JOY'S fried cornbread, always good but never quite the same. Recipes seem to evolve when done from scratch. Can't beat homemade!

Time to wake up this old thread! Supper tonight was meatloaf, with mac’n cheese, accompanied by warm cornbread and garden fresh ripe tomatoes, lady cream peas, and cantaloupe. And of course iced tea! This is the time of year when the stuff we grow in the garden is at its best!
