Re: Outdoorsman Thread
I used to see black squirrels in Ohio and West Virginia and also up in Niagra Falls. Cool looking.

They have white squirrels down in Olney, Illinois. I've passed through there many times on the way down home & coming back. I've never had the privilege of seeing one.

Their white fur must make it difficult to hide from predators during most of the year.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
I was just there a couple of weeks ago to attend a celebration of life for my old buddy Fred. It was held in the park and I didn't see even one. It makes me wonder if they crossbreed with gray squirrels or fox squirrels or do they not socialize with them. Inquiring minds want to know how they remain pure white.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Black squirrels are over-populating the suburbs here. You can’t drive down the street without having to stop once or twice for squirrels running across the road.
I never knew that white squirrels even existed!
I learned something new today.

I've wondered the same thing Jerry. I guess the last time I was in the park was probably 10 years ago and we were on the way home and just took a little drive through, I didn't see any.

My oldest brother lived in Olney for a short time, several years ago. They were very plentiful in the park back then. It has prob been 15 or 20 years since I drove thru and saw some, maybe they are getting to be less common.jerryd6818 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 1:42 pm They have white squirrels down in Olney, Illinois. When my brother lived there he found a dead one in the park. He went to whatever city official necessary, and got permission to keep it. He brought it home to another brother who was dabbling in taxidermy at the time. Yep, we ended up with a white squirrel in the house.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Reminds me of a funny little story ...
20+ years ago my (future) Mother in Law had a pontoon boat. A muskrat kept chewing up the transducer wire.
She finally caught and shot it (and hole in the boat) . . .
and had the critter stuffed and mounted with the wire in its mouth ...

Looks very fine Cudgee. I am assuming there are no crocs in the vicinity.

I saw a stuffed chipmunk mounted in a fox's mouth, so why not.

Chilly day, but I was out surveying the North 40 and checking the herd. Town in the background, that puff of smoke is the CSX Locomotive Shop firing up a diesel.

Thanks, John! You and your wife will have to visit for some hiking around the mountain some time.
BTW- they finished that construction mess around Fairfield Inn finally, almost fell out of my car!
