What can you tell me about Dixon Cutlery Co ?

Post by bdev »

Just receive the knife pictured below. I've never heard of Dixon Cutlery Co.
The knife is 3 3/8" and has composite jigged handles. It's a very thin knife measuring around 1/4" thick.
Levine's guide says circa 1920's (German) but this knife doesn't seem to look that old.
Anybody have any Dixon knives?

Thanks......Bruno

I checked Goins. This is what it says: Dixon Cutlery Co. USA. c1920. That's it. That's all it says. It's as if they made knives for a week then closed their doors forever.

Thanks for checking Mike. I've seen the Dixon tang stamp with Germany, France & U.S.A.
Dixon was probably an importer and also had some knives made here in the states.

My only Dixon. It is in my carry rotation and among my favorite Barlows. I have never seen another like this since I stumbled across this one.

The tang stamp is worn but reads "Dixon Cutlery Co. Germany". My guesstimate is that the knife is from the inter-war period but that is not much more than a W.A.G.

Here's a size comparison with a typical Russell Barlow:

That's a good looking Barlow. Looks stout and well built. I wonder what happened to that company?

If you check the Kastor list, knives associated with Adolph Kastor and Camillus Cutlery you will find Dixon Cut. Co. Austria, Dixon Cut. Co. Germany, Dixon Cut. Co. Rhineland, as well as Dixon Cut. Co. with no country of origin. All our suspect brands, which means the research tends to point to a connection with Kastor though it is not yet been proven. All are dated 1920 and all were made in Germany with the exception of the ones stamped Austria, which was made in Austria.

At the moment I can’t find a picture of any Dixon Cut. Co. knife I have owned, but I think I’ve had two or three of them, all seemed to be good solid knives.

Dale, I found your post after posting this one in the "Mystery Knife" thread. It's from Dixon Cut. Co. U.S.A.. I'm assuming it's American because it bears no other country of origin. Here's a couple pics. Odd scales, some kind of fiber/composite ? Regards, J.O'.

I have been trying find out about Dixon Cutlery also, with no answers. I have come on this knife stamped "Dixon Cutlery Co. Rhineland". It is in very good condition considering that if like the other responses It was made in 1920.
