Robeson and Amherst

The first Robeson knives were imported by Millard Robeson from England and Germany exclusively. This continued from 1979 until 1896 when Robeson began manufacturing knives in the United States. Since inception, the company has gone through several reorganizations & eventually ended up as a Queen Cutlery brand.

Robeson and Amherst

Post by RobesonsRme.com »

I posted a pic of this knife in another forum earlier this evening. Johnnie asked me to post it in the Knife Lore Forum, as well.

While visiting other forums and threads here at AAPK, I came across a discussion and some pics concerning Amherst Cutlery. I was very impressed with their work.

One of the Amherst knives pictured reminded me of this old Robeson 622357 pattern jack. Robeson introduced this pattern, along with fourteen others just before Christmas in 1910. I have a full page color ad from the inside front cover of The Saturday Evening Post, dated Dec 3rd, 1910, showing all fifteen of the "new" patterns. So, we know the start date of this knife. I do not know when they might have stopped making it. It is very nicely etched on the master blade, "ShurEdge" using the script logo style of that time.

Mike Losicco has a black composition handled two blade dog leg jack with this same etch, and he has posted a photo of that knife here in the past.

I think Bob Cargill might have used a knife of this pattern to come up with some of the Cripple Creek knives that he manufactured.

I don't know if Amherst might have had this old Robeson knife in mind when they started making those beautiful jacks of theirs.

But, what once was old, is now new again.

I borrowed the Amherst photo from WoodRat99, and I think the knife pictured belongs to ForensicJim.
