So I installed the shield on the Schrade..........

Post by rea1eye »

So I installed the shield ( thanks Jeff) on my new used Schrade 822 and it
glued in well. The area where the shield goes was clean
(previously pinned too I believe)* and was very shallow to
begin with. After gluing in the shield and looking at it a few
more times I see the shield sits above the covers just a bit on
all four sides. Has anyone owned a knife with the shield sitting
just above the covers? I wonder if that is how the shield broke
or fell off in the first place.

Bob

p.s. I used a thin layer of Super Glue

* I ground down a pin that was sticking up about 5 hairs width before
installing shield

I have several that the shields sit high, inching the Challenge Cut Co that I'm carrying today.

quite a few people think the shield should be a hair above the scales. I dont consider it an issue as long as its nicely moored and evaen all arond.

I just rebuilt a Camco for a member where the shield was originally staked into the plastic handle--there are four tabs at four corners, which were pressed (melted) into the handle, either with heat or with ultrasonics. That shield sat entirely above the cover (except the tabs, of course).

Bob they likely sanded the original pinned shield down along with the covers to make everything even. It's not an issue to have them proud though as long as there aren't any super sharp edges. The pinned shields on the old time jigged bone or stag handled knives were always a bit proud so that the shield pin could be sanded down and finished without marring the handle material.

Never thought of that. Also, no super sharp edges on the shield.

The shield actually looks good being a little proud.

Yes, a slightly proud shield appears to be normal.
I recommend using a good two-part epoxy rather than super glue, if you ever need to replace another.
Super Glue can form a brittle bond and break if dropped.
Still, it is probably better than what was used at the factory!

I have some Schrades where the shield is just a bit proud and some where it is flush. I am guessing that getting the shield flush was not a big deal for the fellows putting the knifes together. I do not have any Schrades where the shields sit overly proud, to my eye or touch.

The two on the left are flush, the two on the right are just a bit proud.
