Chilly day out on the farm. Remnants of yesterday's flop of a snow storm, barnyard and looking West and North towards town. Started out around 20° but it's warming now and the skiff is melting.
That’s a beautiful mountain farm!

An old wives tale was that snakes stayed dormant underground until the first thunderstorm of Spring. Anyone else ever heard that?

Hard to believe there's still no snakes in Ireland. ☘️🇮🇪

Ireland is one of many countries where there are no snakes
Ireland is not the only place in the world without snakes – there are no native species of snakes to be found in Iceland, Greenland, Hawaii, New Zealand, parts of Canada, northern Russia, or, not surprisingly, Antarctica . . . meaning St. Patrick would have been a very busy fellow.

Rather, it seems that the snakes have served as an allegory for paganism, which St. Patrick “banished” when he brought the Catholic religion to Ireland’s shores.

"At no time has there ever been any suggestion of snakes in Ireland. [There was] nothing for St. Patrick to banish," Nigel Monaghan, keeper of natural history at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin, told National Geographic.

Or, as Mark Ryan, director of the Louisiana Poison Center at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, told the magazine, “There are no snakes in Ireland for the simple reason they couldn't get there because the climate wasn't favorable for them to be there."

Thanks, Jerry. ::handshake:: On that list, only Hawaii and New Zealand are surprising. I don't think snakes like snow very much. 😉

Awesome pictures, John! 😎👍👍

We spent the weekend in Shepherdstown, WV. Stayed at the Bavarian Inn overlooking the Potomac River. Hiked to breakfast (I recommend Betty's for a nice farm-style breakfast 😋) and then over to the C&O Canal for a few miles. Cold and breezy but nice to be outside.

Great looking area, JMH! Looks near perfect for hiking and apparently, you had great weather. It has been good here, too good actually, noticed ticks are already out. How long have you had that soup strainer? I am going to guess many years. I have a couple of friends whose wives have never seen them w/o facial hair.

Red Rider John, there is some good history there! Enjoyed your photos!
