I'm working on organizing my shop. I had a scrap wood pile that was overflowing and pretty ugly to look at. I managed to free up a cubby hole, and moved my scrap wood into it, and then made a door out of some scrap lumber. I then used some more scrap to make a little sliding latch to keep it closed. I really had to "Tetris" all that wood into the cubby hole to make it fit!

lol - exactly. But it's always hard to find just the right piece of scrap for a project.

I did use it yesterday, and the totes lifted out pretty easily....although they are pretty heavy and I am pretty old.

Good work at organizing, Mike. I can use the inspiration to do some of that in my shop, and also in my recently acquired new (to me) canopy on my work truck.

My work efficiency goes way down when my tools are just shiitepiled in there.

I need to go! Haven't been in years.

Made my first file handle today. From tree branch (ash) to handle in a couple of hours. Cut off a piece of copper pipe for the ferrule. I put it on a big Nicholson "Made in the USA" rat tail file. Finished with a coat of tung oil.

Just 27 more to go.

Good work, Mike. If you’re doing a lot of filing without a handle, chances are sooner or later you’ll puncture your palm with the tang. Usually it happened to me when I was in a weird position, under the truck or up on a ladder.

Many of my favorite hand tools have homemade handles. Using a scroll saw or band saw in conjunction with the lathe can produce some interesting and unique contours.

There was a one-way pallet at work on friday that had a messed up board on it. One of them boards that are so ugly that they actually look good again. "Vintage" look. So I asked if I could have it.

Took it appart this morning and made myself a frame for one of my American license plates. Corners are not exactly perfect but that's as close as I could get it with a hand saw. Couldn't use a machine because Germans don't make noise like that on Sundays around here.

The wood was of a redish / brownish color. Some boards were more redish & some boards were more brownish and it was hard like oak to cut. The pallet was from China so I have no idea what kind of wood it is but I know that it's very hard to cut by hand.

I mounted it to a piece of OSB board. Need to get some clear stain to put on it so it will look a bit more glossy.

Turned out pretty good, Tom. Some character in those boards, for sure.

Is spar varnish sold over there? Here it’s available in satin and gloss flavors. Easy to brush on. Does develop a slightly amber tint over time, some woods benefit from that.

Well thanks for the comment & for the Tip Parker! I appreciate it!

I don't know if that brand is sold over here or not but I'll check a few different places & see if I can find it anywhere. An amber tint would probably look good on this wood.
Maybe I'll get lucky & find it.

Dang it! I already showed this to my daughter.

Had a little excitement in the shop today. I am making this corner bookshelf thing for my daughter, and was running one of the shelves through the table saw. I sensed something wasn't kosher, and stepped to the left side of the saw just before the board kicked back, flew over and hit my mower and some fishing rods. Luckily nothing was hurt except the board, which now has a big arcing gash through it. That was the first time I have experienced a kick back, and it was totally my fault (crosscutting with the fence). I knew better, and hesitated for a second - but was in a hurry and went ahead with the cut (nah, it will be fine!) Lesson learned.

Cross cutting with the fence will do it every time. So will ripping a narrow piece with the narrow piece between the fence and the blade.
I found that out the hard way. Fortunately I was hit in the head with the flying lumber so I knocked some sense into me and never repeated that error.

Very nice license plate frame, Tom! I like the vintage look.

Broke my shop rocking chair. I don't think this thing was really meant for 6'2", 250 lbs.

It broke right where a screw goes through. I tried to glue it back together several times, but the glue wouldn't hold. So I took an ash limb and turned a new spindle on the lathe. If you look very closely, you can tell which one I replaced.
