Started the album cabinet for my sister. Baltic birch plywood. I hate cutting 45 corners - they never seem to come out accurate - but these did somehow. Ordered the edge banding and brushed nickel legs today. Need to get a piece of 1/4 plywood for the back. She wants it stained "espresso" - i.e dark brown.

This will hold her old vinyl records with a record player on top.

A friend gave me this barn wood yesterday. He was going to use it in his new house, but decided not to. His boss was taking down a 1800s barn in Alabama, and gave him some of the wood. It is mostly oak - and VERY heavy. I stacked it behind my shop - now I have to decide what to do with it.

The wife is not really into rustic - she likes mid-century modern.

Tore down a 100 year old garage today I’ve owned for 43 years one of my pre retirement projects

I gave up on buying a four season home on the lake

Nice work, Garddog. Must be fun running that big equipment!

I used some iron-on edge banding for the plywood on the album cabinet I am building for my sister. Have never used this stuff before, but it went on real slick. It is a real thin roll of birch veneer that has glue on the backside that you heat up with the iron. My wife didn't even mind that I borrowed her iron.

I finished up the Record album cabinet for my sister today. She will store her vinyl record albums in this with a little record player on top.

She wanted dark espresso stain. I think I liked it better blonde, but oh well. 3 coats of stain and 3 coats of poly. Took me longer to apply the finish than it did to do the wood working.

Thanks Glenn. Yes, she was wanting something kinda' mid-century modern looking, so she said. I just made it like the pictures she sent.

I am not happy with the finish on it. It is so hot and dry here, any stain, poly, primer or paint you try to put on dries almost instantly, and doesn't have time to flatten out. Looking at the forecast, I think it is going to be over 100 degrees here in Texas every day for the next 10 years or so.

I spray painted in this heat and it went on very rough, the metal was hot and the air so hot it dried in the air basically. I’ve quit looking at the DFW weather forecast, it’s depressing me.

I am restoring an old Rockwell wood lathe. Tried painting the sheet metal yesterday evening around 6 pm (it was still 107). The paint dried instantly when it hit the metal. It basically looks like I sprayed an angora sweater on it. Had to take it all back off today.

I guess I am going to have to get up early in the morning and spray it in the morning before it gets over 90. It seems to be hitting 90 around 10 in the morning.

I am D-U-N with this hot weather.

I finally delivered the little album cabinet I made over to my sister's house yesterday. She was very happy with it and sent me this pic after she got it set up with her little record player and an old lamp that has been passed down in the family. Most of the albums are from my parents, which we listened to when we were kids back in the 1960s and 70s. (we listened to the albums, not our parents

) Just kidding. We did listen to our parents - occasionally.

My wife bought a potting bench at an estate sale. After we got it home, we found it was much more shoddily built and rickety than we had thought, so we are having to do quite a bit of fixing up / repair work / re-modeling to it. The tiles were loose, so they came off and I replaced the top with some scrap wood and I reinforced all the joints to make it much more sturdy. After my wife paints it, we will replace the tiles.

I picked up a second band saw last month - a Rockwell Delta. I cleaned it up and stuck a new blade on it and it runs well. I was going to install a riser block on it, but at the last minute decided to put the riser on my old Taiwan bandsaw. Took a couple of hours, and had to drill some new holes for the alignment pins, but it worked out good. I finally was able to re-saw a good sized mesquite log this weekend. With the riser installed, I can now cut up to a 12 inch log / board (instead of just 6"). I managed to get 4 nice book-matched mesquite boards - 1 1/4 thick x 4 1/2 wide. Re-sawing generates a lot of sawdust and waste wood / bark. There is a layer of sawdust on everything in my shop. But the wood is free!
