Man, you are right - lumber is expensive right now.
I found a local guy who makes live-edge tables, counter tops, bar tops, etc. He cuts the ends off and does'nt use them, so he sold me a few. They will make good bowl blanks to turn. I will put some pics on the lathe thread.
I have a couple of projects to do around the house and started pricing materials. OMG!
That’s awesome that you found a local source. I’ve never done anything with live edge lumber, but there are some awesome things folks are doing with It.

"live edge lumber" ?
does this mean that the side is not sawn square and so includes the bark ?

Hi KJ,
The side is left natural, except the bark is usually knocked off (although not always).

My grandson-in-law made a live edge table. It's gorgeous. Looks much better in person than in my cell phone picture.

Very cool Cuz. Did he do the planing himself? Those usually take a pretty big set up. I like the color he chose for the epoxy. Very nice.

Wow Jerry, that's a beautiful table!
I've got some checks and cracks in some of the oak and walnut I am turning. I need to get some resin and see if I can fill in some of the places.

Cool! I have a couple of trees that need to come down in the back yard if it ever dries up around here. I’ll most likely have some live edge pieces that once they dry, I have a project or two in mind. I may have to have you pick his brain for me.....

Thanks Glenn! It’s kind of addicting. I have some more and bigger projects in the pipe line. It looks like you have a fun woodworking project in the works too.

Yeah, it's not even a project for me, but I'm humbled he asked me for help. He must be REALLY desperate.

Well i built a 24 x40 foot woodshed using 'live edge'. My friend had a home made saw mill and we sawed up the tops and butts left over from building a log house into boards 1" thick. We left the edges 'raw' because this allows the breezes to blow through which helps remove moisture from the stacked firewood.
We call these raw edges "wayne", that is how it sounds but not the correct spelling.

Nice job on the project. I used to make cedar hope chest years ago and I loved to take raw wood and turn it into something nice and useful. Now I just do it with a wood lathe.
