I have been lax in following this thread. It is great to see how everyone is putting Amber to good use. Brian would be very happy to see this. I am looking forward to my time with her in August.

Very cool of Tony to give Amber a travelling companion to make the journey to Florida 8) ::tu:: Symbolic, too, in a way with your gf being in the hospital and having you, her bf, by her side for love and support. Reminds me of the numerous times I was in the hospital, Brian always sent me "care packages" filled with all kinds of sweets and often included a new knife because he knew it would cheer me up. That's the kind of friend he was. On June 15 it will make one year since Brian died and I still think of him every day and miss him terribly. This AAA tribute has really been helpful to me in dealing with my grief. Much appreciation to everyone who has participated so far in caring for Amber as a way to honor Ivoryman's memory.....difficult to express the level of gratitude I feel for you guys for doing this for Brian.....means a lot, more than words can say. Mahalo ::handshake::
Hard to believe it's already been a year since we lost our friend. I just looked up your first announcement a couple of days ago to see which day it was, as I knew the date was drawing near. Good to hear this tribute has been helpful and I hope it brings some comfort seeing how much we all respected Brian and enjoyed his friendship, posts, and beautiful pictures. And I must say that several of you have been doing him proud with all the great photography this past year. ::tu::

Enjoy your month with Amber, Scott! And hope your girlfriend is on the mend and feeling better soon. ::pray::

such good news Scott, we wouldn't want you talking up a storm about a girl named Amber while your GF was in the hospital - now she can put a face with the name ::nod::

Mmmmmm, you're making my mouth water, Scott ::drool:: Been forever since I had any bacon but the memory of the smell of bacon frying (especially over a camp fire in the morning) is enough to get the juices flowing. I don't know if it will do anything for the patina, but a little bacon grease ought to keep the pivot nicely lubricated :lol: Didn't they use bacon grease on wagon wheel axles in the olden days? And also for greased pig and pole climbing events at county fairs ::hmm::

Never heard of that being done but would definitely like to know. ::shrug::

Ever try to catch a greased piggy? Its hilarious if nothing else.

I've never seen any documentation of bacon grease being used on wagon wheels but I'll bet it's been tried. When you're in the middle of nowhere you use whatever you have. I've used cooking oil out of the chuck box to lube a jack screw when nothing else was available. After sitting in the hot sun for a while the jack smelled kinda' like french-fries. :lol:

Right you are, Squach! ::tu::

https://www.farmcollector.com/equipment/wagon-tools/

Early Wagon Tools: Jacks and Oils for Wheel Maintenance

Wheel-grease containers were among the tools most wagons needed for simple maintenance. At first only leftover meat greases and tallow were used on axles. They were often carried in ox-horn containers, looped together with a chain and mounted over the rear axle during transit. Meat grease lubrication was kept at a minimum because of its short supply, but history also records that in emergencies, fatback – today’s bacon – was sliced and wrapped around wheel spindles as a lubricant.
